Due to popular demand, after a sell-out season in 2013 and a sparkling live broadcast on ABC Classic FM, the da Ponte Project are reviving their delightful fun filled production Making Mozart for three performances in May 2016.
In Making Mozart the cast of three internationally acclaimed opera singers, plus a renowned accompanist and a prominent opera critic, take music lovers on a whirlwind tour of Mozart's greatest operas: The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and Cosi Fan Tutte.
In a witty production, conceived by Baritone Mario Bellanova, Making Mozart explores the relationship between Mozart and his librettist, the somewhat shady, Lorenzo da Ponte.
Opera Critic and Broadcaster, Ewart Shaw created the imaginative script of conversations between Mozart and da Ponte which may have taken place in Mozart's studio.
Musical arrangements by Jamie c*ck(at the keyboard as Mozart) and scenes from the three operas are performed by Catriona Barr, Gisele Blanchard and Mario Bellanova. Each of the singers (with the aid of rapid costume changes) assume different roles from the operas to recreate scenes.
Mario Bellanova received a Helpmann award nomination for his role as Germont in La Traviata for State Opera and will appear as the villainous Scarpia in Tosca later this year. Gisele Blanchard delighted audiences as the innocent peasant girl Zerlina in Don Giovanni for State Opera. Catriona Barr, blends her musical career with running the Top Note winery with her husband. Jamie c*ckis one of Australia's most sought after accompanists.
Direction was very much a group affair with all group members pitching in with ideas and choreography.
Ewart Shaw, appearing as da Ponte, says, "In a nutshell Making Mozart is simply music by Mozart, libretto by da Ponte, with additional dialogue by Ewart Shaw".
Making Mozart: Two performances take place at the North Adelaide Community Centre at 7.30pm May 14 and at 3pm May 15. The third performance will be at 7:30pm May 21 at Ngeringa Cultural Centre Mt Barker Summit.
