The GC, Adelaide Fringe's biggest brick and mortar venue, is staging its second biggest program yet, jam-packed full of music, comedy and magic. With 240 performances, 44 different shows over the four weeks, audiences can enjoy their Fringe acts in air-conditioned comfort, complete with great food, cold beer and small queues.
The 2018 music program is the strongest and most diverse concert offering to date. The Showroom will host Stewart D'Arrietta with his World Premiere Belly of a Drunken Piano with the music of Tom Waits, Randy Newman, Joe Cocker, Tim Buckley, Ian Dury and more. Australian music legend Glen Shorrock founder of the Little River Band will be performing his greatest hits and exploring his lifetime career (the show's already racing to sell-out), in a program that presents many legends: Ross Wilson, Mike Rudd and Rum Jungle, Melvin Brown with his sell-out Chuck Berry Lives and the GC's very own Bald Eagles!
Some of the best comedy acts will be brought from across the globe including The Kagools' TUTTI, which was a hit last Fringe, Card Ninja Javier Joaquin will serve up some gobsmacking, comedic card wrangling and one of Australia's longest performing stand ups and media stars Richard Stubbs will bring his show In Full Flight and yes only at the German Club, a show called Kosher Bacon from Channel Ten's The Project writer Michael Shafar.
Britain's bad boys of magic Kane and Abel have finally landed in Australia and have decided to break every single rule telling audiences all the things they shouldn't about their illusions. Brit Danger Dave Reubens brings his Stunt Magic show and puts life and limb on the line for the audience.
There's magic and fun for kids and families too, with Magic on the Edge (Adelaide's top illusionists who sold out at The GC in 2017), Cosmo the Clown and Bingo Jack, all with matinees and/or early evening shows so you can bring the kids and grandkids. You can see more of the comedy and magic program here.
There is also a concentrated program of Cabaret, Theatre and Dance with Leather Lungs: Son of a Preacher and Myth with Sylvia Brecko who will knock your sequined socks off. And when you get them back on, Melvin Brown with his one-man bio-show A Man, A Magic, A Music. Auditions: The Cabaret, Dancing With The Star (Movin' Melvin) and the irrepressible John Sabine with Power Lines.
Alan Rosewarne and Colin Koch have curated The GC program after a lifetime of working with artists and live music. Striving to develop a great environment for Fringe artists and audiences alike, with longer changeovers between acts, great techs and longer rehearsal times, the GC is set to have an outstanding Fringe season.
Since starting as a Fringe venue in 2016, the GC has continued to support the live music scene in Adelaide by opening the German Club doors to music lovers and performers alike throughout the rest of the year. The central city location of Flinders Street means you're avoiding the Fringe hustle and bustle of the East Parklands, but are not so far away that you can't head down later in the night.
The GC might not be the biggest and busiest venue, but if small queues, convenient parking, a comfortable environment, and great food and drinks are what you value, then The GC is the Fringe venue you've been searching for.
