Sopranos, Emma Horwood and Alexandra Bollard, return to The Firm, to present the fourth concert in this year's series.
After sellout performances with Adelaide Chamber Singers' critically acclaimed Monteverdi's Fire, in Adelaide and Melbourne, the two singers are looking forward to an intimate recital with pianist Jamie Cock.
The trio will perform a selection of songs and piano solos by Tchaikovsky, Faure, Brahms, Satie and works by Adelaide composers, Raymond Chapman Smith, Luke Altmann and Quentin Grant.
A highlight of the concert will be the world premiere of Quentin Grant's Two Sisters, a set of four duets exploring the love and loss between two sisters, one of which has died.
"The harmonies are haunting and the texts very powerful" says Emma. "Ali and I both have sisters we are very close to so can draw on our personal experience to imagine how such a tragedy would effect us."
After nine years singing together, the two sopranos' voices have become ideally matched for singing duets. "This gives us such an advantage as we work so instinctively together and are used to listening and achieving a perfect blend" says Emma.
The Firm's composer directors, Quentin Grant and Raymond Chapman Smith, have written several works , over the years, especially for Emma Horwood and pianist Jamie Cock.
Most have been concert performances but they've also produced the CD, Night Dreams, and a state theatre co-production, This Uncharted Hour.
Quentin and Emma have also made recordings of incidental music for Slingsby Theatre including for The Tragical Life of Cheeseboy, which is currently touring Ireland and Norway.
Emma says she relishes working with the composers. "It's such a rewarding experience and having the composers there to guide us in their vision of the songs is so valuable. I've often wished I could ask Schubert a few questions!"
"Put simply" says Quentin, "Emma has one of the most amazing voices in Australia. And we're delighted that Alexandra Bollard can join us again too - having sung previously for The Firm in 2012."
Emma Horwood, Alexandra Bollard and Jamie c*ckwill perform on Monday October 13th, 8pm, in Elder Hall. Complimentary drinks and nibbles will be served after the concert.
The final concert in The Firm's 2014 series will be held on November 3rd with the Langbein String Quartet and pianist Marianna Grynchuk.
