THIS OLD CELLO BOX comes to Adelaide Fringe 2023. Performances run Saturday 11th to Monday 13th March, at 3pm at Gallery 1 at Hahndorf Academy, 68 Main Street, Hahndorf.
London-based cellist, William Jack, presents a cello performance that breaks down boundaries between genres and cultures. Following a jam-packed premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe 2022, the South Australian musician/songwriter will perform his multi-style cello recital at the Hahndorf Academy in the Adelaide Hills.
From Bach to The Beatles and beyond, the program includes iconic songs, dismantled and re-imagined for solo cello, intertwined with original compositions from William's debut album, This Old Cello Box. There's something for everyone, with decipherable elements of worldwide folk, to bluegrass and rock. William incorporates his jazz guitar background into an unconventional style of cello playing, delivering cello-pickin' grooves and catchy hooks alongside intimate melodies.
"I'm passionate about bringing the cello to more diverse audiences and unique spaces", William says. "I love creating music enriched in traditions, but not encumbered by them. I'm finding so much freedom with this music exploration. I'm constantly shifting, shaping and developing it. It's a journey across borders, via a box with 4 strings, that I really enjoy sharing with people."
