MORE GUILTY THAN THE POET Puts Poetry In Motion As Music, Theatre And Acrobatics Collide ImageFeaturing an eclectic combination of acrobatic theatre and song, More Guilty Than the Poet will receive its world premiere in Adelaide today.

The show, presented by Adelaide Festival Centre and SA Circus Centre, uses different forms of artistic expression to explore the concepts of mortality.

More Guilty Than the Poet showcases tenor Robert Macfarlane singing Schubert lieder accompanied by a replica fortepiano (played by noted Australian pianist Michael Ierace). A fortepiano is a predecessor to a piano from the 18th century and this is one of only a handful in Australia in working order.

Gravity-defying dancers and acrobats astound the eyes upon an upturned boat making its journey between life and death along the River Styx, and is co-directed by Robert Macfarlane and SA Circus Centre Artistic Director Joshua Hoare.

Robert Macfarlane said: "The seeds of More Guilty Than the Poet were planted when Josh and I met through a mutual friend to talk about the music of Franz Schubert, probably the greatest song composer of all time."

"Our conversations went on to our individual disciplines - I as an opera singer, Josh as an acrobat - and how there is a shared moment where you take a breath and commit to doing something inherently risky.

"More Guilty Than the Poet uses the music to question the connections between life and death, while the acrobats twist reality with fantasy."

Adelaide Festival Centre CEO & Artistic Director Douglas Gautier said the show, running today and tomorrow in the Space Theatre, is an entirely new concept:

"It's great to see SA Circus Centre branching out with this thought provoking show, which is targeted at an older audience. We are always excited to bring new and exciting concepts to the stage, and More Guilty Than the Poet will be a feast for the senses."
