State Theatre Company is collaborating for the first time with the Adelaide Cabaret Festival in 2014 on a new commission, created especially for Australian stage legend Paul Capsis. Little Bird is the major new work of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and will have its world premiere from 6 - 22 June. Promising to be a rich and powerful theatrical experience, Little Bird is a thrilling solo performance by Capsis in a dazzling song cycle.

Little Bird brings Capsis to the State Theatre Company stage for the first time. A long-time muse to theatre director Barrie Kosky, actor, singer and cabaret star Capsis is a multi Helpmann Award winner and has created extraordinary and brilliantly idiosyncratic roles in productions such as The Lost Echo (Sydney Theatre Company) and Boulevard Delirium (Malthouse Theatre). More recently, he performed in Angela's Kitchen (Griffin Theatre), All About My Mother (Melbourne Theatre Company) and The Threepenny Opera (Sydney Theatre Company).

Little Bird is written by multi-award winning playwright Nicki Bloom (Brink Productions Land and Sea and Tender) and features songs by State Theatre Company favourite and previous member of the Adelaide band The Audreys, Cameron Goodall and composer Quentin Grant (When The Rain Stops Falling). The pair recently collaborated on the 2013 Cabaret Festival hit You, Me and the Bloody Sea.

Drawing upon fairytale, mythology and song to create a compelling dramatic and musical journey, Little Bird will leave the audience transported, uplifted and with tears in their eyes. Described as a dark fairytale for grown-ups, Little Bird looks at the journey of young boy, Wren, from his parents' isolated cottage to the lights of the big city. Along the way, a series of startling transformations occur, blurring the lines of identity, gender and reality as Wren searches for self, for love and for a place to belong.

Director Geordie Brookman said "We're thrilled to collaborate with the Adelaide Cabaret Festival for the first time on this major new Australian work. Paul, Nicki, Cameron and Quentin are an incredibly exciting group of artists, a group that are creating a production that is not just special but utterly unique."

This project has been supported by Arts SA's New Commissions and Exhibitions Fund
