The Kegelstatt Series 2014 bears the title "Evolution and Revolution" and explores how a rapidly changing world at the turn of the twentieth century influenced the music of great nations.
Leigh Harrold adds some information about the composers: "The running joke was that England had not produced a great composer since William Byrd in the 1500s. This point may be debatable, but certainly Holst and Britten jolted British music into the new century, and their legacy speaks for itself. And the program kicks off with a delightful opener by Percy Grainger, a revolutionary Australian musician who also spent time in England."
Program:
Grainger: The Sussex Mummers' Carol for viola and piano
Holst: Terzetto for flute, oboe and viola
Arnold: Divertimento for flute, clarinet and oboe
Britten: Phantasy Quartet, Op.2 for oboe and string trio
Bliss: Nocturne for clarinet and piano
Walton: Quartet for piano and strings
Musicians:
Alexandra Castle, flute, Renae Stavely, oboe, Stephanie Wake-Dyster, clarinet, Leigh Harrold, piano, Alison Heike, violin, Anna Webb, viola and Kim Worley, cello
Alexandra Castle, formerly based in Adelaide, now lives and works in Sydney.
Renae Stavely is an oboist with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
Stephanie Wake-Dyster, having studied in Melbourne and Chicago, is now based in Adelaide.
Leigh Harrold, originally from Whyalla, studied in Adelaide and now lives and works in Melbourne.
Alison Heike is a violinist with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
Anna Webb, formerly based in Adelaide, now lives and works in Melbourne.
Kim Worley, from Adelaide, recently completed his studies at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne, and currently lives and works in Melbourne. Anna and Kim were married in Adelaide last December.
These are all skilled and committed chamber musicians. Kegelstatt Ensemble provides them with an outlet for this passion, and in some cases a lovely opportunity to return to Adelaide and make music with their friends!
Joy and friendship are central to Kegelstatt's philosophy, palpable in its performances and inherent in its name - "Kegelstatt" means "skittle alley" and this nickname was given to a trio by Mozart referring to a game of skittles he played with two of his chamber-music-playing friends.
