Winner of the Holden Street Theatres' Edinburgh Fringe Award for 2018, Build a Rocket is a powerful, funny and uplifting one-woman show about triumph over adversity. The show plays from 12 February 17 March in The Studio, Holden Street Theatres, 34 Holden Street, Hindmarsh, as part of the 2019 Adelaide Fringe.
Written by Christopher York, Build a Rocket is the story of Yasmin (performed by Serena Manteghi), a bright 16-year-old from a small seaside town. In an instant, her life is turned upside down when she becomes pregnant with her son, Jack. Suddenly her Scarborough isn't sandcastles, arcades, and donkey rides. Abandoned by both the father of her child and her alcoholic mother, Yasmin faces one of life's great challenges completely alone - it's just Yasmin and Jack against the world. But can the thing which threatens to ruin her life actually be the thing which saves her?
Receiving eight four-star reviews, Build a Rocket has a tour de force performance from Serena Manteghi, and challenges perceptions about young motherhood in a passionate and heart-warming way.
Build a Rocket is directed by Paul Robinson, with design by Helen Coyston, lighting by Ben Cowens and composition by Simon Slater.
