Built in 1913, Adelaide's Her Majesty's Theatre (Australia's last operating Tivoli Theatre from the famous national vaudeville circuit) will close its doors after one memorable final night performance on March 24th, to undergo a major redevelopment.
The benefit will be held on Saturday, March 24th at 7:30 p.m. at Her Majesty's Theatre at 58 Grote Street, Adelaide.
Beginning at 7:30pm, emcee Jane Doyle, storyteller Peter Goers, and a dazzling lineup of acclaimed performers who have previously graced the HMT stage, including Johanna Allen (Director), Robyn Archer, Michaela Burger, Cameron Goodall, Nancye Hayes, Ali McGregor, Meow Meow, Rob Mills and Tim Rogers, will each take to the stage to say their respective thank you and goodnight.
The doors will then close and a $66 million transformation will begin, undertaken with Cox Architecture and Hansen Yuncken Builders, preserving the building's heritage façade and eastern wall while constructing a 1,474-seat auditorium over three levels (up from 970 seats on two levels), with modern foyers and spacious backstage facilities. It will also include new toilets, full disability access, new stage equipment and a wider proscenium.
Work is anticipated to finish in July 2019, and the theatre to be operating again at the beginning of 2020.
Profits raised from the Her Majesty's Theatre Closing Benefit will go towards the Her Majesty's Theatre Renewal Fundraising Campaign, launched in April 2017 and set up to raise public funds for the historic redevelopment.
Douglas Gautier, Adelaide Festival Centre CEO and Artistic Director says: "We are sad to say goodbye to The Maj for the time being, but are very excited about opening a completely redeveloped theatre in 2020 that will be the pride of Adelaide, and will attract artists and audiences for many decades in the future.'
