As the acclaimed Graduate Singers, conducted by Karl Geiger, come to the close of another successful year they finish on a celebration of that most popular of festivals Christmas and the Nativity.
Graduate Singers celebration of the Nativity begins at 7.30pm Saturday 12 December at St Peter's Cathedral.
The major work is
Ottorino Respighi's
Lauda per la Nativita for soloists, choir, woodwind and piano.
The other substantial work is
Howard Blake's
Four Songs of the Nativity, also with woodwind
. The choir will also perform a number of settings of
Away in a Manger and
Silent Night.
Artistic Director Karl Geiger said of the program: "Respighi expertly blends madrigals and plainchant with vivid and colourful harmony to evoke an ancient simplicity. This is a rare opportunity to hear this masterful work!
"The choir showcases music inspired by the nativity. English composer
Howard Blake, best known for his film scores which employs his gift for melody with flair in his
Four Songs of the Nativity, another South Australian premiere!"
Soloists are: Soprano - Brooke Windows; Mezzo-Soprano - Emma Horwood and Tenor - Norbert Hohl.
Graduate Singers - also known as 'Grads' - is Adelaide's leading medium-sized choir. Grads is committed to presenting high quality, accessible and diverse concerts, and enjoys a reputation for high standards of excellence throughout every aspect of presentation and performance.
In addition to presenting its own concert series, Grads maintain a busy schedule of freelance engagements. Recent highlights include a sold-out
Lunchtimes at Elder Hall Anzac Day Concert (2014) and the
Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (January 2015).
Since 2012, Grads has been directed by conductor, pianist and organist Karl Geiger. In 2017, Grads will celebrate its 40th anniversary, making it one of Adelaide's longest-standing choral institutions.
