Foul Play presents the world premiere of Holly Brindley's Julie in the idyllic Adelaide Botanic Gardens this spring.

Exploring female power and sexuality, this bold new work reimagines August Strindberg's 1888 play Miss Julie into present day South Australia. It's 2AM and as her 18th birthday party winds down, Julie's intimate relationships are tested until they are irrevocably altered.

Holly is an emerging, award-winning South Australian playwright and this will be the first full production of any of her full-length works to date. This play interrogates the grey area of power and sexuality in heterosexual relationships. Holly has been driven by her fascination with what happens when a woman's behaviour is deemed to be "promiscuous" (or not).

Julie will be the second of three works presented by Foul Play showcasing women playwrights and their interpretations of classic works. This triptych also includes Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice (performed in spring 2015) and Emily Steel's original collaboration with the company, Persephone (currently in development and slated for presentation in 2019). Each of these works focuses on women's sexuality and the possibilities of sexual expression available to women as well as the power dynamics in women's relationships with men. "In Eurydice we looked at the 'unrealized woman' and what it means to live without reaching your full potential," said Yasmin Gurreeboo, the company's Artistic Director. "Julie is the woman who is a choice-maker, and Persephone is the woman objectified."

Foul Play's aim is to examine classic works - whether myths or classic literature - through the prism of modern feminism, as well as champion cultural diversity on our stages. Foul Play produces ambitious and experimental work - both in content and form - located in unexpected spaces.

Led by an almost entirely female creative team, this project will transform the Noel Lothian Hall, nestled in the beautiful Adelaide Botanic Gardens into an innovative and immersive performance space. The company will continue its collaboration with visual artist MeghAnn Wilson as designer and will showcase South Australian talent during the Australia Theatre Forum, a national biennial event to be held in Adelaide 3rd-5th October.

Julie will show for 13 nights only Friday 29th September - Saturday 14th October
