Rusalka is a storytelling, a show about the myths of mermaids, presented by Cirque Nocturne. Our guiding nereid in a net hung from the ceiling and performed aerial acrobatics after an introductory reedy warble, which might have worked better if she was miked. The poetry of sirens interspersed other acts, with information ranging from the fourteenth century Melusine, the sirens of Homers Odyssey, to Sedna of the Inuits.

We were treated to fire twirling and drowned belly dancing, some interpretive dance and a tiny glimpse of mermaids swimming. The writing of this show was compelling, but the delivery, unfortunately, didn't manage to match the promise. Several severe timing issues with the musical cues didn't help matters. There's lots of talent here and, courageously, the performers went past this talent, into new territory. The promise of better, more polished things to come is fervently hoped for.
