Nate Charles Troisi stepped onto the stage and those who know me well, and are aware of my general dislike of stand-up comedy, would know that a feeling of trepidation would have ensued. Troisi soon dispelled that by quickly proving to be a very clever and funny story teller, with a string of hilarious anecdotes about his ongoing rivalry and prank pulling with his father.
David Troisi Isn't Gay turns into a multimedia comedy, with very funny photos and videos of his father and other family members showing, as needed to advance and enhance the narrative, on a video screen. This is the only drawback to this performance as it is at the rear of the small stage and was not always easy to see for the first few minutes but Troisi apparently realised and appeared to modify his movement to keep out of the way. That was a nice touch of professionalism that solved the problem.
Yes, it is about a dysfunctional relationship, a son looking for acknowledgement from his father, not just for his efforts but, it seems at times, for his very existence. To get his father's attention he resorts to pranks, and these can easily escalate, as he explains. The title is about, well, that is high tech, top secret and, to a small degree, Internet based, and any further clues will spoil the joke. You'll have to go to see this marvellous comedy to find out.
