After winning Best Theatre at last year's Adelaide Fringe with Echoes, two-time Fringe First Winner Henry Naylor returns to the Holden Street Theatres (34 Holden Street, Hindmarsh) from 14 February until 19 March for the 2017 Adelaide Fringe with his latest play set in the Middle East, Angel.
Angel is inspired by the story of a modern legend; a female sniper - the Angel of Kobani - who held ISIS in check for over a year in war torn Syria. A young female law student, she joined the resistance when the town of Kobani was besieged - and quickly discovered that she had a talent for killing. In the midst of the fiercest fighting since Stalingrad, it is alleged that she shot and killed 100 extremists - making her particularly feared by ISIS, as they believe that if they are killed by a woman they cannot enter Paradise.
In Edinburgh 2016, the show was THE hot ticket. Astonishingly, its month-long run sold-out after just five days - and when extra performances were put on, they too sold out - this time within 24 hours. In total, Angel received 18 five- and four-star reviews, and for a significant proportion of the Fringe, it was the Number One critically-rated show (out of 3,400).
In addition to winning two of the most prestigious prizes - The Fringe First and the Holden Street Theatres 2016 Edinburgh Award - Angel was also nominated for the Best of Edinburgh and the Amnesty Freedom of Expression gongs. The Times in London chose it as one of the UK's Top Ten plays in 2016. It was the ONLY Fringe show to receive this honour.
Angel will be the second play of Henry Naylor's plays to appear at Holden Street Theatres. At last year's Adelaide Fringe, Echoes won five of the leading awards.
After Adelaide, Angel will be going on a world tour, which includes a month off-Broadway at the 59e59 Theater in April, and a month off-West End at London's Arcola Theatre.
Henry Naylor only began writing theatrical dramas after a successful career in TV comedy. Before his Middle Eastern plays he used to be the lead writer on Spitting Image, and wrote for Alistair MacGowan, Rory Bremner, Dead Ringers, and Lenny Henry, among others.
The one-woman show is directed by London Classic Theatre's Michael Cabot, and is performed by rising star Avital Lvova.
