Betrayal begins at the end of an affair; the year is 1977 and Emma is married to Robert. But for the last seven years, Emma has been having an affair with Jerry, Robert's best friend. The story journeys in reverse; turning time upside down and playing out the key events of the last seven years in a mesmerising sequence of intimate interactions. Enthralling and intricately layered, the play provides a ruthless exploration of the complexity of the human heart.
Featuring the luminous Alison Bell (Helpmann Award winner for Hedda Gabler, Doubt) and the electric Nathan O'Keefe (Hedda Gabler, The Importance of Being Earnest), Betrayal explores the delicate fabric of human relationships and deceptions.
Geordie Brookman said "Betrayal is a play of great economy and power. It's full of blood, damage and the heavy consequence of impulsive choices. I'm lucky to have four actors at the peak of their powers, ready to bring Pinter's yearning and dark humour to life."
Considered one of the most influential modern dramatists, Harold Pinter was a playwright, director, actor, poet and political activist. His acting and writing career spanned more than 50 years. His legacy includes twenty-nine plays such as The Birthday Party, The Caretaker, The Homecoming, The Dumb Waiter, No Man's Land, Ashes to Ashes, Betrayal and Celebration; and twenty-four screenplays including The Servant, The Go-Between and The French Lieutenant's Woman.
Betrayal will premiere in Adelaide before transferring for seasons at Melbourne Theatre Company and Canberra Theatre Company.
