For its final Maestro Series concert for 2014, the Adelaide Youth Orchestra - this year comprising around 70 of SA's most talented young musicians - will present a very special program at Elder Hall on Sunday September 21. The Maestro Series 3: Northern Lights concert will include a guest appearance by lauded young South Australian pianist Mekhla Kumar and the world premiere of a work by Adelaide composer John Polglase.

The program for the Adelaide Youth Orchestra's Maestro Series 3 Northern Lights concert will commence with the premiere of Polglase's Lux Nova: A Concert Overture for Orchestra followed by Rachmaninov's popular Piano Concerto No 2. for which 25 year old Mekhla - recently returned home after studying for three and a half years at the prestigious Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany - will team up with the Adelaide Youth Orchestra. The program will conclude with a piece by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius - Symphony No. 2.

Mekhla began playing the piano when she was four - securing numerous scholarships, eisteddfods and competitions before gaining a place at the Elder Conservatorium of Music under Professor Stefan Ammer in 2007. After completing her Bachelor of Music with Distinction she undertook Honours, achieving first class - then headed to Germany to continue her studies. Last year she achieved a very rare 100 percent for her Master's degree at the Hochschule für Musik and has just completed an 'Advanced Studies' postgrad course there with Professor Dr Tibor Szasz. Back on home turf Mekhla is now focusing on her performance career.

"We're thrilled to have a pianist of Mekhla's calibre performing as part of our final Maestro concert for 2014 and I know she'll inspire many of the Adelaide Youth Orchestra musicians who are themselves in the process of forging professional music careers," says AdYO's Artistic Director and conductor of the Adelaide Youth Orchestra, Associate Professor Keith Crellin OAM. "I'm equally delighted that AdYO is able to present the world premiere of John Polglase's Lux Nova: A Concert Overture for Orchestra."
