After a spectacular Adelaide Fringe season, local Adelaide circus company Cirque Nocturne are set to conquer the international stage, with an invitation to perform at the San Diego International Fringe Festival.
Their self titled show is a tribute to the Film Noir genre that had its heyday in the 1940's. The show follows the fortunes of a down on his luck private investigator who is attempting to solve a murder.
As he follows leads and interviews suspects, every character he meets has a spectacular circus skill to display. The show features acts by jugglers, aerialists, acrobats and more.
Founded in 2016, Cirque Nocturne have staged a number of performances around Adelaide and interstate, including at the Adelaide and Melbourne Fringe festivals, the Adelaide Cabaret Fringe and with the Adelaide City Council in the CBD.
This marks the first time the company will perform internationally.
Cirque Nocturne's founder, producer and performer Kate Lawrence says of this invitation, "We are incredibly happy to be recognised on the international stage in this way, this invitation is such a great opportunity for us. Adelaide has always hit well above its weight in terms of producing amazing International Artists in a variety of genres, and we are so proud to now be included amongst them."
the company are seeking donations for the public to be able to accept the invitation.
"Up until now, our productions have been funded by the performers themselves, using money earned by teaching circus and gymnastics classes for kids around Adelaide. With such a big venture though, there is no way that our cast can afford to get there on our own, so we are seeking help with the costs" says Ms Lawrence.
Due to the timing of the San Diego Fringe Festival, the company is ineligible for arts funding from either state or federal sources, as it falls between grant rounds.
the company are holding a fund-raiser at the South Australian Circus Centre on April 29th to help fund their trip, with an encore performance of their show. They are also running a crowd funding campaign and inviting corporate sponsors to come on board for the tour.
"We are hoping that the people of Adelaide take pride in our home-grown show and will get behind us and help support local artists to grace the international stage".
