Musical theatre licensor Theatrical Rights Worldwide (TRW) has entered into an agreement with Monty Python for licensing of the authorized live performance of the group's work. The script, a selection of the seminal sketches from the original BBC TV series Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969-1974), is only for performance by school and university theatre groups in North America. The show has been in development for several years and after a final pilot production in 2017, now approved for licensing by Monty Python.
Monty Python released a statement marking the release of the show, saying, "We think corrupting the next generation is essential."
TRW President & CEO Steve Spiegel revealed the first ever deal to make the Python catalogue available for grand rights licensing at a company briefing earlier today, saying, "This brand is at the foundation of modern comedy and beloved around the world. This show begins a new legacy for Monty Python and makes available for the first time ever, the authorized performance of their material in a musical show."
MONTY PYTHON'S EDUKATIONAL SHOW is officially released for licensing on November 12, 2018 and features a 'greatest hits' selection of the best-known and loved Monty Python sketches, songs, and animations. Upon release, the show will be available for performance only by accredited schools, universities and select youth theatre programs.
TRW's Chief Creative Officer Fred Stuart worked with Monty Python to develop the show, noting, "Monty Python's writing is comic genius and the perfect vehicle for teaching young actors how to serve great material."
