Known to millions for his TV and comedy work, Alexander Armstrong, a former choral scholar at Trinity College Cambridge, announces he has signed his first album deal with East West Records, a label of the Warner Music Group home to a diverse roster of artists from Michael Bublé to Simply Red and actor Hugh Laurie.
Many will know him as the host of the hugely successful BBC game show Pointless and as one half of the BAFTA winning comedy duo Armstrong and Miller, baritone Alexander will now realise a lifelong ambition in releasing his debut solo record.
He was a hit at last year's concert honouring the work of Sir Tim Rice, in which he sang 'No Rhyme For Richard' from Blondel.
Music has always been a huge part of his life; from his earliest days as a chorister at St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh, his weekly Saturday afternoon show on Classic FM, right up to his more recent performances touring with The Alexander Armstrong Band. Alexander's passion for music extends to all genres from Thomas Tallis to Tom Waits, but his first love has always been choral music.
And it is this love that is the inspiration behind his debut album which will celebrate songs of the British Isles. He will start recording the album this summer with veteran music producer Simon Franglen.
Known for his work with composers James Horner and Thomas Newman, on soundtracks including Avatar, Titanic (for which he won a Grammy ® award), Skyfall and The Amazing Spider-Man, Franglen will bring his wealth of experience to an album reflecting the diversity and beauty of Britain's pastoral song tradition.
Alexander commented: "I am so excited to be joining the illustrious stable at East West and to be working with this wonderful team. Singing has had to take a back seat for the past 25 years of my life, but with this fabulous project I get to put that right."
Conrad Withey, A&R at East West Records commented, "I am incredibly excited to welcome Alexander to East West. He is a fantastic performer, loved across the nation for his TV and comedy work, and we are about to embark on an artistic journey that will celebrate his lesser known but just as impressive talents as a singer."
Alongside the recording of the album this Summer, he will also be making various key TV performances including the BBC1's VE Day 70 on May 9th and Sunday Night At The Palladium on May 10th on ITV where he will perform alongside Josh Groban.
