30 Days of NYMF: Day 7 FANTASY FOOTBALL: The Musical?

By:

We are absolutely thrilled that "Fantasy Football: The Musical?" will be premiering at NYMF! Over the last few months, however, I have gotten the same questions, over and over. So, without further ado...
FFTM FAQs
By David Ingber, book, music, and lyrics
What is fantasy football?
It's a sports fan experience. You draft the best real football players onto your fake team (hence the "fantasy"), and your team scores points depending on how well these real players perform. You compete in a league against your friends, who have also drafted The Players they think are the best.
Isn't that ridiculously geeky?
Oh my God yes. And we love it.
So...you're writing a musical about it?
Hell yeah! Over the last 20 years, fantasy football has become a multi-billion dollar industry, with millions of players worldwide. All summer long, NFL-related magazines and TV shows pop up, and many of them don't even mention how the NFL teams will do! Instead, they simply talk about which players you should draft in your Fantasy League. This is a major, major obsession for many, many people.
Well, biting your nails is a major obsession for many people. Should you write a musical about that?
The most interesting thing to me about Fantasy Football is that, no matter how fake the teams are, the impact it has is very real. Players use Fantasy Football as an excuse to keep in touch with old friends. Some people use it to strike up a conversation with a stranger at a party. And some people use it so they have something fun to root passionately for, even if the rest of their lives are sort of stuck in the doldrums.
I don't know anything about fantasy football. Will I still enjoy the show?
Of course! There are definitely some inside jokes for the fantasy football enthusiasts, but I promise you, we don't want the show to be a gimmick. We want it to be universally enjoyable. The non-Fantasy-literate people involved in the workshops of this musical all claimed that they didn't feel like outsiders, even if they didn't have prior knowledge of the subject matter. And some even claimed a greater appreciation for us nutty sports fanatics.
Anything else that might convince me to go?
The show takes place in 1991. Parachute pants. Done.
