TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Comes To Stageworks Theatre 4/2010

In March of 2010, Stageworks Theatre will debut its long-awaited permanent home in the Channel District with the highly acclaimed classic, To Kill a Mockingbird.

After long deliberation, it was decided that To Kill a Mockingbird is the play that clearly reflects the message of diversity and social injustice that Stageworks Theatre has been promoting throughout our 27-year history.

Since its publication in 1960, the semi-autobiographical Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee has been read and appreciated by readers around the world.  The novel is loosely based on the author's observations of her family and neighbors, as well as on an event that occurred near her hometown in 1936, when she was 10 years old. It is renowned for its warmth and humor, despite dealing with serious issues of racial inequality and injustice.

The primary themes of To Kill a Mockingbird involve racial injustice and the destruction of innocence.

To Kill a Mockingbird was rated behind only the Bible in books that are "… most often cited as making a difference."  (Library of Congress, Center for the Book)

The play by Christopher Sergel, adapted from the novel, is based on the multiple Academy Award-winning film, written by the late Horton Foote.

Stageworks Theatre proudly adds a new page to its award-winning history as they open our doors with this magnificent work.

Thanks to the generous gift of  Ken Stoltenberg of Mercury Advisors who fully understand what makes the Channel District unique. The developer of Grand Central at Kennedy donated 8,000 square feet of rent-free space to Stageworks Theatre for the development and enhancement of Tampa’s Artistic Community.
