Delany & Santiago-Hudson Cast in Shanley Play Workshop

Casting has been completed for the Vassar workshop of John Patrick Shanley's (Doubt) new play. Dana Dalaney, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Jeremy Strong, Chris Bauer and Trevor Long join the previously-announced Chris Cooper in the cast of the show. Defiance, formerly titled Chain of Command, will run from July 29th to 31st at Vassar College's 135-seat Powerhouse Theatre.

Defiance is a drama about two officers who clash over an explosive incident; Cooper will play Lieutenant Littlefield, with Ruben Santiago-Hudson as Captain King, Dana Delany as Margaret Littlefield,  Chris Bauer as Chaplain White, Jeremy Strong as PFC Evan Davis and Trevor Long as Gunney.

Cooper received a 2003 Academy Award for his portrayal of an eccentric gardener in Adaptation. He has also garnered nominations and awards for a number of other screen performances--a Screen Actor's Guild nod for Seabiscuit, an Emmy Award for HBO's My House in Umbria, and a Screen Actor's Guild Award for American Beauty. Other film credits include Silver City, Lone Star, The Horse Whisperer, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and This Boy's Life. In 1980, he appeared on Broadway in Of the Fields, Lately, and other theatre credits include The Ballad of Soapy Smith and A Different Moon.

Santiago-Hudson received a Tony nomination for his performance in Seven Guitars; other New York appearances include Gem of the Ocean, Jelly's Last Jam, the one man-show Lackawanna Blues (he also appeared in the film version). Other films include The Devil's Advocate and Shaft, and he has appeared on "Law and Order" and "The West Wing." Delany is a two-time Emmy Award winner for the late '80s TV show "China Beach;" more recent series are "Pasadena" and "Presidio Med." Her film credits include Light Sleeper, Tombstone and Spin, and she has appeared in New York in Translations and Dinner with Friends. Bauer is currently seen on HBO's "The Wire," and lists Tilt, The Exonerated and the recent Broadway revival of A Streetcar Named Desire as New York theatre credits.

Shanley is the recipient of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony, Drama Desk, and Obie Awards for his play Doubt. Other full-length plays include Psychopathia Sexualis, Four Dogs and a Bone, The Big Funk, Women of Manhattan, Savage in Limbo, The Dreamer Examines His Pillow, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, and Welcome to the Moon. His script for Moonstruck won both the Writers Guild Award and an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He made his debut as a feature film director with his script Joe Versus the Volcano. He also wrote the screen adaptations of both Alive and Congo. This is his 8th season at the Powerhouse.

New York Stage and Film and Vassar previously announced the rest of the 21st Powerhouse Season, to be held on the Vassar campus in Poughkeepsie from June 17 to July 31, 2005. Each summer, through the Powerhouse Season, more than 200 professional writers, directors, performers and designers live and work together with some 50 apprentices in a unique artistic environment on Vassar's Hudson Valley campus. This year, the Powerhouse Season incorporates residencies by Epic Theater Center, Classical Theater of Harlem, The Riot Group and Naked Angels.

All tickets are $35. Ticket holders for The Talk should call the box office to have their tickets honored.
