'High School Musical 2' Completes Filming, Airs Aug. 17

Filming for the sequel of Disney's massively successful "High School Musical" is complete, and the program, which follows a concert at a country club during the high schoolers' summer vacation, will air August 17 on the Disney Channel, according to TimesUnion.com. "High School Musical 2"'s cast will include the return of Zac Efron as Troy, Vanessa Hudgens as Gabriella, Ashley Tisdale as Sharpay, Lucas Grabeel as Ryan, Corbin Bleu as Chad and Monique Coleman as Taylor. Also returning for the sequel are the original's writer, Peter Barsocchini, and director/choreographer Kenny Ortega.

"The team is back and more dedicated to making a great picture than ever," Ortega told the newspaper.

The story of a High School basketball player and a shy, bookish student who try out for a their school's musical production, "High School Musical" has been watched by over 100 million TV viewers, and has gone on to sell over 3.7 million copies of its CD soundtrack and 7.5 million copies of its DVD release.

"Since its extraordinary debut on the Disney Channel U.S. in January 2006, 'High School Musical,' written by Peter Barsocchini, has broken viewership records around the world and the soundtrack from Walt Disney Records was the #1 album of the year on the Billboard Top 200.  A 40-city live High School Musical concert tour °© featuring five of the film's original cast members °©launched in San Diego in November and makes its final stop in Los Angeles on January 29.  The concert tour most recently played to a crowd of more than 15,000 at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, NJ, on Monday (1/8/07)," stated earlier press materials.
