Celebrated African-Canadian artist, Anthony Sherwood, leads a new production of Shakespeare's The Tragedie of Othello, the Moore of Venice presented by Ale House Theatre, April 17th-May 2nd, 2015. The play, seldom staged in Toronto, will be performed on a Renaissance-inspired stage in the heart of Trinity-Spadina. Sherwood is joined by Shaw Festival actor Patric Masurkevitch, Alumnae Theatre darling Andrea Brown, and up-and-comers Hilary McCormack as Desdemona and Tayves Fiddis as Iago.

Under the threat of global catastrophe, silly people toil away. Their great general, Othello, keeps the peace until he is undone by his private affairs. Othello is rooted in human dealings, yet it hazards questions of race, immigration, and the value of human life. "The play deals with human emotions," says Sherwood "... love, hate, jealousy, and envy."

Othello follows three successful Shakespeare productions by Ale House Theatre Company. Ale House is known for its clear and invigorating shows inspired by theatre practices of Shakespeare's day. Productions bring an exciting contract between performer and audience while rejecting common practices of simplification. "There is no good and evil, tragedy or comedy," says director Joshua Stodart. "Our audience members have probably been human for a long time. They don't need to be told who to like or shown how to feel."

Ale House is committed to making theatre accessible to students, and will be offering discounted tickets to high schools through our Tickets for Teens program and hipTIX.

The Tragedie of Othello, the Moor of Venice, playing at The Ale House Indoor, 609 Manning Ave. Toronto. Performances April 17th to May 2nd, 2015. Tickets available at www.OthelloToronto.com and T.O.TIX
