"Pina Bausch was a genius and one of the most important choreographers of the second half of the twentieth century. She is someone who invented a completely new genre: she invented dance theatre. The idea of incorporating theatrical elements like dialogue and text into dance and telling a different kind of story through movement and choreography is something she pioneered." - Jorn Weisbrodt, Artistic Director, Luminato Festival.
Pina Bausch's original approach to theatre and dance influenced and inspired not only a generation of choreographers, but also theatre makers, visual artists and filmmakers. In 2011, German filmmaker Wim Wenders' documentary "Pina" - a tribute to the late choreographer with her dancers performing her most famous creations - was nominated for an Academy Award. Called "A must-see" by Variety and "A thrilling piece of cinema. Five stars" by The Times, "Pina" will return to Toronto screens at the Bell TIFF Lightbox during Luminato Festival.
Now celebrating their 40th anniversary season, KONTAKTHOF is one of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch's signature pieces, offering an evolving commentary on the physical interaction between men and women. KONTAKTHOF, roughly translated to "courtyard of contact," is a towering achievement, revealing the essence of Bausch's lifelong exploration into desire, human identity and the endless search for emotional attachment. Created in 1978, KONTAKTHOF has been performed around the globe but has never before been seen in Toronto.
