Photo Coverage: Alan Cumming Hosts Live Out Loud Gala

Tony Award-winning actor and LGBT advocate Alan Cumming hosted Live Out Loud's Ninth Annual Young Trailblazers Benefit Gala on Monday, April 26th. More than 500 community leaders attended the event, which will took place at the Chelsea Art Museum. The annual event culminated with the awarding of $2500 scholarships to four high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership skills. The recipients this year are Eric Multer, Brandyn Brunelle, Chelsea Schade, and John Dargan. (more...)

Algonquin Hotel's Oak Room to Feature Rodgers, Akers, and Marcovicci in 2010

The Algonquin Hotel has announced their 2010 Oak Room schedule, which will include a wide variety of cabaret performances. The new season will begin with Johnny Rodgers performing What A Wonderful World May 11-29. The show will feature his versions of 'What A Wonderful World,' 'Huggin' and Chalkin,' 'Too Marvelous For Words' and his own songs 'Home To Mendocino,' 'One More Moment' and 'The Best Of You In Me.' The Metropolitan Room Presents Barb Jungr, 5/18-23

For a one week engagement, May 18-May 23, British singer Barb Jungr will celebrate the U.S. release of her new album, 'The Men I Love' (released 5/11) at the Metropolitan Room. Jungr, who is best known for her deconstruction of songs by American rockers, subtitles her new album as 'The New American Songbook." Her new live show, "River," is her eighth engagement at The Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, since 2007. A collection of iconic songs from the late 20th century that rarely are heard in jazz and cabaret rooms, "River" opens on Tuesday May 18 at 7pm, playing six shows through Sunday May 23 at 7pm. The show includes a number of standouts from last year's rapturously reviewed "The Men I Love," which The New York Times said "sparked a small revolution" when it opened at the Cafe Carlyle in March, before being reprised at in a sell-out run The Metropolitan Room in September. NYC To Begin Charging For Film Permits Due To Budget Trouble

According to The Hollywood Reporter, film and television productions that wish to film in New York City will have to pay a $300 fee for City Hall permits for the first time in the city's history. (more...)

Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art Presents 'Puppet Masters of the Macabre,' 4/29

The Lincoln Center Screens 'The Most Dangerous Man in America' 4/30

On Friday, April 30 at 2:30 pm, the Lincoln Center will screen the Oscar-nominated documentary, 'The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and The Pentagon Papers,' a film by Judith Ehrlich and Rick Goldsmith that was partially funded by The Yip Harburg Foundation. Robert Ellsberg, Daniel's son and a key figure in the Pentagon Papers affair, will appear at the event for a talk-back and questions. (more...)

Mortenson Performs 'Three Cups of Tea' for Literature to Life, 5/18

The Literature to Life® program of The American Place Theatre will honor Greg Mortenson, the author and humanitarian, with its 2010 Literature to Life Award and a live performance of an excerpt of Mortenson's book, 'Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time,' at a gala May 18 at The Time Center, 242 West 41st Street. The event will benefit the American Place Theatre's arts and literacy outreach in schools across America. Mortenson will address the gala and see his NY Times bestseller performed for the first time. Leon's True Colors Co. & Jujamcyn Present August Wilson Monologue Competition, 5/3

Kenny Leon's True Colors Theatre Company and Jujamcyn Theaters will present the fourth annual August Wilson Monologue Competition National finals Monday, May 3 at Broadway's August Wilson Theatre (245 W. 52nd Street). Nat'l Fish & Wildlife & FedEx Deliver Grant to Expand Parks' 5 Borough Parks Green Roof

Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, Long Island Sound Future's Fund and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Assistant Director Lynn Dwyer, FedEx Manager of Social Responsibility Rose Flenorl and FedEx, Green Apple Corps volunteers and MillionTreesNYC Training Program participants planted flowers and shrubs and prepared the Five Borough Shops roof for a new addition to its almost 20,000 square foot green roof. Cornelia Street Cafe Features Jason Rigby Quintet, 4/23

The Cornelia Street Cafe will be featuring the Jason Rigby Quintet today, April 23. The Sage Quintet is a powerhouse ensemble formed to explore group improvisation with the twists and turns of a two-horn front line mixed with the dynamic sound of the Fender Rhodes electric piano. The band was formed conceptually out of the influences of Miles' 70's electric bands, Ornette Coleman's explorations with Don Cherry and Dewey Redman, and Jack DeJohnette's mid-70's work - all culminating in a modern mixture of grooves, free melodies, psychedelic sounds, and angular horn lines. Staten Island Children's Museum Celebrates Cinco de Mayo with Tin Art Workshops, 5/1-2

On May 1st and 2nd, the Staten Island Children's Museum will celebrate Cinco de Mayo by hosting Tin Art Workshops. Kids will get the chance to make Mexican art by attending the workshops at 1, 2 or 3pm. Kids will create traditional Mexican embossed & colored tin decorations with artist Janice Patrignani. Cinco de Mayo commemorates a Mexican army's victory over a better equipped & twice as large French force at the battle of Puebla. Tin art is a type of Folk Art created by Mexican artists which involves embossing metals to create a work of art. The works are often enhanced with jewels, tiles or paints. In addition to the workshops, regular museum exhibits will be available as well. (more...)

59E59 Theaters (Elysabeth Kleinhans, Artistic Director; Peter Tear, Executive Producer) announces a special digital exhibition of Donna DeCesare's multimedia project, 'Destiny's Children: A Legacy of War and Gangs', which will be open for viewing immediately following each the performance of DE NOVO (running April 28 thru May 16). The exhibition is FREE and open to DE NOVO ticket holders. The play, written and directed by Jeffrey Solomon, was part of the American Off-Broadway festival.Donna DeCesare will also be participating in a post-show Talk Back with the cast and creative team following the matinee performance on Sunday, May 2 at 3:30 PM. 'Highlights in Jazz' Series Ends 5/13 with Billy Taylor Trio, et al.

After 37 years, Jack Kleinsinger has decided to end his 'Highlights in Jazz' concert series. May 13, 2010 (the 300th concert of the series) will be the last 'Highlights' show. Kleinsinger notes that his decision was not an artistic one, but a financial one: 'If someone can come up with the financing necessary to produce the annual series I'll continue,' he said. 'But with cuts in arts funding and private sponsorships for jazz down it's not likely I'll continue.' (more...)
