Photo Coverage: Alan Cumming Hosts Live Out Loud Gala by Linda Lenzi - April 27, 2010Tony Award-winning actor and LGBT advocate Alan Cumming hosted Live Out Loud's Ninth Annual Young Trailblazers Benefit Gala on Monday, April 26th. More than 500 community leaders attended the event, which will took place at the Chelsea Art Museum. The annual event culminated with the awarding of $2500 scholarships to four high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership skills. The recipients this year are Eric Multer, Brandyn Brunelle, Chelsea Schade, and John Dargan. (more...) The Metropolitan Room Presents Barb Jungr, 5/18-23 by BWW News Desk - April 27, 2010For a one week engagement, May 18-May 23, British singer Barb Jungr will celebrate the U.S. release of her new album, 'The Men I Love' (released 5/11) at the Metropolitan Room. Jungr, who is best known for her deconstruction of songs by American rockers, subtitles her new album as 'The New American Songbook." Her new live show, "River," is her eighth engagement at The Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, since 2007. A collection of iconic songs from the late 20th century that rarely are heard in jazz and cabaret rooms, "River" opens on Tuesday May 18 at 7pm, playing six shows through Sunday May 23 at 7pm. The show includes a number of standouts from last year's rapturously reviewed "The Men I Love," which The New York Times said "sparked a small revolution" when it opened at the Cafe Carlyle in March, before being reprised at in a sell-out run The Metropolitan Room in September. Kids will get the chance to make Mexican art by attending the workshops at 1, 2 or 3pm. Kids will create traditional Mexican embossed & colored tin decorations with artist Janice Patrignani. Cinco de Mayo commemorates a Mexican army's victory over a better equipped & twice as large French force at the battle of Puebla. Tin art is a type of Folk Art created by Mexican artists which involves embossing metals to create a work of art. The works are often enhanced with jewels, tiles or paints. May 13, 2010 (the 300th concert of the series) will be the last 'Highlights' show. Kleinsinger notes that his decision was not an artistic one, but a financial one: 'If someone can come up with the financing necessary to produce the annual series I'll continue,' he said. 'But with cuts in arts funding and private sponsorships for jazz down it's not likely I'll continue.' (more...)
