Met with boisterous, well-deserved standing ovations both at the start and at the end of the intermission-less program, Stritch was in usual top form, dispensing out acerbic comments and witty barbs about her life, her career, and her love and admiration--both personally and professionally--for the Broadway composer. Stephen Sondheim Documentary in the Works; James Lapine to Executive Produce

Cindy Adams writes in today's New York Post that James Lapine will executive produce a documentary on Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim. The film, due out next year, will include 'material is on Sondheim’s life, fresh interviews he’s not given before, videos and new versions of his songs.' (more...)

According to the London Evening Standard, theater powerhouses Stephen Sondheim and David Ives have teamed up on a new musical, which is currently in the earliest phases of composition. The Standard reports: "Sondheim speaks of pushing forward and says he has "20 or 30 minutes" written of a new musical that he is collaborating on with American playwright David Ives, a New York regular little known in London." Stephen Sondheim, known for contributing some of the most beloved musicals of all time to the musical theater canon, is not shy about expressing his dismay with the current Broadway and West End offerings in the UK Times. Of the selections du jour he says: "There is an anodyne homogeneity that governs Broadway musicals, so I don’t see many. There’s nothing wrong with having a lot of commercial crap as long as you have something else. Unfortunately, nearly everything on Broadway is commercial crap. The same is true of the West End. BWW Reviews: Tony Winners Ebersole & Stokes-Mitchell Honor Snowed in Sondheim

Sometimes even in disappointment, comes something wonderful, which was certainly the case with the magnificent impromptu showcase that occurred at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa on Saturday, October 29. A mixed blessing if there ever was one, the evening's original agenda--a one-on-one candid conversation between ASCAP's Director of Musical Theatre Michael Kerker and legendary Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim--instead morphed into an enchanting 100-minute expanded tribute concert featuring two veteran Broadway powerhouses in their own right: Tony Award winners Christine Ebersole and Brian Stokes-Mitchell. This ad-hoc concert quickly assembled that afternoon ended up being such a magical night, filled with gorgeous, soul-stirring performances, lots of hearty laughs, and even the occasional tear-jerker. Stephen Sondheim to be Awarded 2011 Handel Medallion, 11/1

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg will join Alec Baldwin to present the 2011 Mayor's Awards for Arts and Culture to six individuals and organizations in celebration of their outstanding contributions to New York City's cultural life. The Mayor will also present the Handel Medallion, New York City's highest award for achievement in the arts, to the world-renowned composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim. The event, to be held at New York City's acclaimed Alice Tully Hall, will feature live performances by leading performing arts organizations, and appearances by special guest artists. (more...)
