Cohl: "Producing SPIDER-MAN is Scary" by BWW News Desk - September 10, 2010He is the man who brought SPIDER-MAN back from the brink. In a feature out yesterday, the New York Times profiles Michael Cohl, the man about which we have heard little, but who is responsible for resurrecting the most expensive and, for some, most highly anticipated Broadway show in history. Cohl stepped into the role of lead producer on the mega-musical in the fall of 2009 after a significant investment in the show fell out, leaving the production stifled and dry. A former music tour promoter for U2 and the Rolling Stones, Cohl was recruited by SPIDER-MAN composers Bono and The Edge to reinvigorate the production. The New York Times reports that press agent Adrian Bryan-Brown of Boneau/Bryan-Brown has cut ties with Broadway's upcoming SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK. Bryan-Brown's Thursday statement noted that he 'made the personal decision to resign this week,' and looked forward to seeing the production on Broadway. He has been working on the show for the past three years. Variety reports today that SPIDER-MAN, Turn Off the Dark is yet one step closer to opening at the Hilton Theatre on Broadway, as Marvel Comics has granted the production a 5th (and an alleged final) extension on the rights, in anticipation of a November or December opening. Today, Julie Taymor was honored by New Dramatists for a Lifetime of Acheivement at the Marriot Marquis Hotel in Times Square. A topic the director couldn't avoid, according to the New York Times: the status of the upcoming SPIDER-MAN: Turn Off the Dark musical, which has experienced significant delays and cast changes due to a large finaincial fall out last fall.
