Laine Butler and Johan Anker, the creative team behind the National School of the Art’s very successful afro-punk Macbeth in 2017 / 2018, direct their startling re-imagined version of everyone’s favourite Shakespearian Comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Set in a world of plastic that reflects both attitudes and materials, and highlighting issues such as identity and gender fluidity, this Shakespearian spectacle will find a home in the more intimate FRINGE at the Joburg Theatre. A not-to- be missed encounter between Renaissance drama and Generation Z will once more give credence to Ben Jonson’s quote that Shakespeare was “not of an age but for all time”.
