Or is it the exploration of the dark side of man’s psyche, feeding a vicarious blood lust in the deep recesses of our primordial hind brains? Or, is it a bit of schadenfreude, particularly if the victim is “deserving”?  All of things await the anxious theatregoer in Palm Canyon’s Theatre’s latest venture, Steven’s Sondheim’s macabre masterpiece “Sweeney Todd”.

When the pandemic hit, Charles E. Gerber, a NY actor, director, and acting instructor, moved his studio, Will's Playshop, online. From April 25th at 4 p.m. EST - Midnight April 29th, performances will be accessible to a worldwide audience, on a 'pay what you can' basis to benefit The Food Bank for New York City as well as The Workshop Theater.

Transport Group's The Unsinkable Molly Brown just opened at Abrons Arts Center, starring Tony Award nominee Beth Malone (Fun Home) as Molly Brown; David Aron Damane (The Book of Mormon, Big River, The Life) as JJ; Whitney Bashor (The Bridges of Madison County) as Julia; Omar Lopez-Cepero (On Your Feet!) as Vincenzo; Alex Gibson (SpongeBob SquarePants; Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812) as Erich; and Paolo Montalban (Pacific Overtures, The King and I) as Arthur. Rounding out the cast are Paula Leggett Chase; Kaitlyn Davidson; Tyrone Davis, Jr.; Gregg Goodbrod; Michael Halling; Karl Josef Co; Nikka Graff Lanzarone; Shina Ann Morris; Keven Quillon; and CoCo Smith.

Los Altos Hills will be alive with The Sound of Music this summer, when multi-award winning Foothill Music Theatre presents the Tony, Grammy, and Academy Award-winning musical. This beloved musical, set in Austria in 1938, follows novice Maria Rainer who becomes the governess for the von Trapp family, capturing the hearts of the seven children and their father, a widowed naval captain. As the Nazis occupy Austria, the family is forced make decisions which forever change their lives, fleeing their home in pursuit of freedom. Director Milissa Carey, music director William Liberatore, and choreographers Brett and C.J. Blankenship breathe new life into this classic tale of hope, love, and family. The Sound of Music will play July 19- August 5, 2018(press opening: July 20) at the Smithwick Theatre, I-280 & El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills. As BroadwayWorld reported yesterday, stage and screen star, Patricia Morison died at the age of 103 at home in Los Angeles of natural causes. A stage icon and legend best known for her starring roles in Cole Porter's Kiss Me Kate and The King & I opposite Yul Brynner, she established an indelible mark in films with a reputation as a the villainous femme fatale with large blue eyes and extremely long, dark hair that made her a favorite of studios and fans alike. 

The all Australian cast of BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL, led by the outstanding Esther Hannaford as Carole King, recreate the original production that has been seen on Broadway and the West End, infusing an energy and lightness to the incredibly beautiful and brilliant expression of the true story of Carole King and her closest friends.

Based on The Once and Future King by T.H. White, CAMELOT combines the legend and lore of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table with the enchanting melodies of two American Musical Theatre giants: Lerner and Loewe (Brigadoon & My Fair Lady). From Carol Channing ('Finger paints, chicken feathers, and glue thrown into an electric fan'-1966) to Bette Midler (Potluck in a laundramat'-1973), Blackwell remarked, 'I'm only saying out loud what everyone else is whispering.'

As BroadwayWorld sadly reported earlier this week, Marni Nixon, perhaps best known for dubbing the singing voices of the leading actresses in films, including THE KING AND I, WEST SIDE STORY and MY FAIR LADY, passed away from breast cancer on July 24th. She was 86.

In The Line King's Library: Al Hirschfeld at The New York Public Library, The Library for the Performing Arts presents the largest exhibition of Al Hirschfeld's artwork and archival material from its collection. On display through January 4, 2014, in the Library for the Performing Art's Oenslager Gallery, the free, multimedia exhibition celebrates the Al Hirschfeld Foundation's latest gift of Hirschfeld papers and objects to the Library, and commemorates the 110th anniversary of his birth. The Four King Cousins made a triumphant return to the concert stage, after a three decade absence, before a sold-out audience at LA's famed Catalina Jazz Club. Glamorously gowned for their entrance, the vocal quartet opened the evening with a high energy medley of Carole King's 'Music' and Neil Sedaka's 'That's When The Music Takes Me' which showcased their intricate four part harmonies. The group, whose new CD compilation More Today Than Yesterday is available now, performed a 90 minute set featuring songs from their new album, including 'I Couldn't Live Without Your Love,' plus standards from the Great American Songbook including a stunning and heartfelt rendition of 'You Made Me Love You,' and 'I'll Get By' an early hit by their Grammy nominated mothers, The King Sisters, which the group performed acapella to the delight of concertgoers.

In a timely production that coincides with the 45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination, TheatreWorks, the nationally acclaimed theatre of Silicon Valley, presents the regional premiere of THE MOUNTAINTOP by Katori Hall.
