BWW Reviews: Brahms and Tchaikovski Make a Fine Pair

Brahms two piano concertos, written some twenty years apart (as their opus numbers 15 and 83 display) were not referred to as concertos at all at the time of their premiers but rather as 'symphonies with piano obligato,' and it's easy to see why. They both feature some ravishing string parts that practically almost suggest concertos of their own and require almost super-human virtuosity and above all stamina (the 2nd in particular) on the part of the soloist. Joining Jamie on this holiday evening were Broadway favorite Loni Ackerman; Singer, performer and concert sensation Michael Amante; two-time Emmy Award-winning comedian Judy Gold; Tony Award-nominated actress and singer Valarie Pettiford; Broadway veteran and Tony Award winner Tonya Pinkins and London's own stage, TV and cabaret star Giselle Wolf. At the famed Alwyn Court Jamie deRoy & it's residents performed in the court yard of this New York City designated Landmark's annual Holiday Party. The neo-French Renaissance apartment building was built in 1907 and it's list of celebrity tenants is long. Among them were Frederick Steinway, Oscar Levant, Fred Allen and Natasha Richardson. Directed by Casey Childs, the cast features Michael Laurence (Krapp39, Broadway's Talk Radio, Opus at Primary Stages), Tony nominee Mary Beth Peil ('The Good Wife,' 'Dawson's Creek,' The King and I), and celebrated violin soloist Hanah Stuart (Chicago Symphony Hall, Zankel Hall). The production features a set design by Neil Patel, costume design by David C. Woolard, lighting design by Mary Louise Geiger, original music and sound design by Lindsay Jones, and projection design by Jan Hartley.The limited engagement plays through April 28 at Primary Stages at 59E59 Theaters. Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy yesterday became the second married couple to receive a Hollywood Walk of Fame star on the same day (following producers Richard and Lauren Shuler Donner in 2008). The actors - who both appeared on Broadway in two separate productions of David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow - welcomed the playwright and other high-profile stars to celebrate their new place on the Walk of Fame. Directed by Ethan McSweeny, the cast features Michael Bakkensen, Marylouise Burke, Marin Hinkle, Stephen Kunken, Paul Niebanck, and Elizabeth Rich. Rx will have set design by Lee Savage, costume design by Andrea Lauer, lighting design by Matthew Richards, original music and sound design by Lindsay Jones, and prop supervision by Faye Armon.
