2019 has come and gone, and we are reflecting on those we have lost in the Broadway and theatre communities throughout the year.

As BroadwayWorld previously reported, stage and screen star, Valerie Harper, passed away following a decade-long battle with cancer. She was 80 years old. Today BroadwayWorld remembers Harper with a look back into our archives.

On Monday, the League of Professional Theatre Women (LPTW), a not-for-profit organization committed to promoting visibility and increasing opportunities for women in the professional theatre, welcomed Tony Award nominated and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel, who received this year's Lifetime Achievement Obie Award and whose critically-acclaimed Indecent is nominated for a 2017 Tony Award for Best New Play. Vogel discussed her extensive body of work in theatre, film and TV, with Drama Critic Linda Winer. Broadway fans had plenty of reasons to celebrate this year, with dozens of shows having opened since January, hundreds of actors having made their debuts, and many more having returned to the stage for critically acclaimed performances. Not all news was good though, as we also suffered a loss of an incredible amount of talent. Below, BroadwayWorld sends a fond farewell to those who passed away in 2014.

After 5 days featuring 10 new films from around the world; 9 retrospective screenings with artists such as Jennie Livingston, James Toback, Julie Taymor and Frederick Elmes; 9 amazing panels featuring the brightest industry minds; and 8 special events including conversations with Michael Moore, FIRST TIME FEST, The Second Time Around came to a close last night, April 7 with its Closing Night Awards Ceremony which took place at the 42West Nightclub in NYC. Playwrights Horizons (Tim Sanford, Artistic Director; Leslie Marcus, Managing Director) continues its 2008/2009 Season with the New York premiere of THE SAVANNAH DISPUTATION, a new play by Evan Smith (Psych and The Uneasy Chair at Playwrights Horizons, Remedial English for the Young Playwrights Festival at Playwrights Horizons, Servicemen at The New Group). This will be Mr. Smith's fourth collaboration with the theater company. Directed by Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie (Chicago, New Jerusalem), in his Playwrights Horizons debut, the production will began previews on Friday, February 6, 2009 with an Opening Night set for Tuesday, March 3 at 7PM. The limited engagement will run through Sunday, March 15 at Playwrights Horizons' Mainstage Theater (416 West 42nd Street).

On Wednesday June 11, 2008 the Theatre World Awards for Outstanding Broadway or Off-Broadway Debut performances during the 2007-2008 theatrical season took place. The awards were presented by former Theatre World Award winners, including: Alec Baldwin (Loot, 1986), Griffin Dunne (Search and Destroy, 1992), Alexander Gemignani (Assassins, 2004), Andrea Martin (My Favorite Year, 1993), Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights, 2007), Rosie Perez (References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot, 2001), and B.D. Wong (M. Butterfly, 1988). There were also be performances by former Theatre World Award winners, including: Karen Akers (Nine, 1982), Cheyenne Jackson (All Shook Up, 2005), Carol Lawrence (West Side Story, 1958) and Alice Playten (Henry, Sweet Henry, 1968).

The 21st Annual AIDS benefit celebrated the work of two great American composers-Marvin Hamlisch and Harry Warren.
