Everyman's Pygmalion: A Gem of a Production

In the Greek myth of the same name, the sculptor Pygmalion creates his vision of the perfect woman, Galatea, and breathes life into the statue with the help of the gods. In George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, Professor Henry Higgins changes the life of a cockney flower girl through the magic of language and a good makeover. At the Everyman Theatre, director Eleanor Holdridge breathes new life into this timeless story which has been told and retold in many times and many ways since its publication in 1913. (more...)

A unique masterpiece, Pygmalion is one of Bernard Shaw's most popular plays. It is the story of phonetics professor Henry Higgins who bets that he can transform Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a lady and pass her off in high society. Pygmalion is a modern myth and also a strikingly contemporary view of sexual politics and the science of romance. The story inspired the well-known Lerner and Loewe musical My Fair Lady (1956).
