When the musical Ragtime was produced for Broadway in 1998 it was a colossal, big-budget show. It cost some ten million dollars. What in the world were the folks at tiny little Union Avenue Opera thinking when they decided to include this show in their twenty-ninth season? Ragtime, the musical treatment of E. L. Doctorow’s vast rambling nostalgic, wonderfully American novel, is far removed from opera.

Blackfriars Repertory Theatre and the Storm Theatre presents a new production of Eugene O'Neill's Ah, Wilderness!, directed by Peter Dobbins (The Rainmaker), it was announced today. Performances began on January 25 for a run through February 17 in the Black Box Theater at The Sheen Center for Thought & Culture (18 Bleecker Street). Opening night is set for this Thursday, January 31 at 7:30pm.
Before the opening night performance a representative of Actors' Equity presented the theatre with a proclamation in honor of their 50thanniversary which included praise for not only Porthouse and Kent State University, but for Terri Kent, who has been leading the endeavor for 18 successful years. Trinity Rep closes out its 2017-18 Season with the Tony Award-winning musical Ragtime, which was written by Terrence McNally (book), Stephen Flaherty (music), and Lynn Ahrens (lyrics). Under the direction of Artistic Director Curt Columbus, Trinity Rep's production examines how the musical, which is set in 1906, reflects the country's current political and social climate. Based on the celebrated 1975 novel of the same name by E.L. Doctorow, the musical tackles race, women's rights, immigration, and workers' rights. Ragtime runs April 26 - May 27 in Trinity Rep's Elizabeth and Malcom Chace Theater, with press opening on Monday, April 30 at 7:30 pm. Tickets start at $25.
