MEGA STAGE TUBE: On This Day 3/18- Sutton Foster

Happy Birthday, Sutton Foster! Foster's portrayal of Reno Sweeney in Roundabout Theatre Company's production of Anythng Goes earned her the 2011 Tony Award Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Sutton also starred on Broadway as Princess Fiona in Shrek: The Musical, for which she was honored with Tony and Drama Desk nominations, and the Outer Critics Circle Award. Prior to that, Sutton was Inga in the Mel Brooks musical, Young Frankenstein, Janet Van De Graaff in The Drowsy Chaperone (2006 Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations, LA Ovation Award) and Jo March in Little Women: The Musical (2005 Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle Award nominations). She is the recipient of the 2002 Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Astaire Awards for her performance as Millie Dillmount in Thoroughly Modern Millie, a role she created in the 2000 La Jolla Playhouse premiere. On The Today Show July 12, Broadway's Jenny Powers sang Kathie Lee Gifford and David Friedman's most recent collaboration, 'You Do The Impossible,' on the 'Everyone Has a Story' segment honoring triathlete and cancer survivor Molli Serrano. BROADWAY ROX, a new concert event, recently played Queens Theatre (14 United Nations Avenue South in Flushing Meadows Corona Park). Produced by Nederlander Worldwide Entertainment, BROADWAY ROX celebrated the rock and pop hits of Broadway including songs from Wicked, Jersey Boys, Rent, The Who's Tommy, Mamma Mia, Spring Awakening, Hair, Rock of Ages, Jesus Christ Superstar and many more. The musical evening featured a 5 piece band with music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Jason Howland (composer of Little Women) and is directed by Rob Evan and Rich Affannato. STAGE TUBE: On This Day 1/23- LITTLE WOMEN

Today in 2005, Little Women opened at the Virginia Theatre (now the August Wilson Theatre), where it ran for 137 performances. Based on Louisa May Alcott's classic 1869 semi-autobiographical novel, it focuses on the four March sisters - brassy, tomboy-like, aspiring writer Jo, romantic Meg, pretentious Amy, and kind-hearted Beth - and their beloved Marmee, at home in Concord, Massachusetts while the family patriarch is away serving as a Union Army chaplain during the Civil War. Intercut with the vignettes in which their lives unfold are several recreations of the melodramatic short stories Jo writes in her attic studio. The Broadway cast included Sutton Foster, Maureen McGovern, Janet Carroll, Jenny Powers, Megan McGinnis, and Amy McAlexander. (more...)

Arena Stage begins a new life in its renovated home at the Mead Center for American Theater in Southwest D.C., opening its inaugural season with a classic American musical that similarly embraces life on a new frontier. Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! is the first production at the Mead Center and features an all-star cast under the direction of Artistic Director Molly Smith.
