The Phantom is coming to Italy! The Phantom of the Opera, which just concluded its record-breaking run on Broadway, is getting ready to premiere in Italy. As BroadwayWorld previously reported, the musical will open this summer at Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia in Trieste, followed by the Arcimboldi Theatre in Milan. In a staging by Etienne Cousineau, 20 singers and an orchestra of 40 musicians will share the stage to give life to the characters inspired by the famous novel by Gaston Leroux and the musical work of Andrew Lloyd Webber.

This weekend, Michael Crawford made a surprise appearance at the Huntington Beach Academy for the Performing Arts' production of The Phantom of the Opera in Orange County, California. Today in 1989, Into the Woods closed at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre), where it ran for 765 performances. Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, and premiered on Broadway in 1987. Into the Woods won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical (Joanna Gleason), in a year dominated by The Phantom of the Opera.
