What is a pro-shot and how is it different than an adapted film? Pro-shot is an abbreviation for professionally shot, denoting a stage play that was captured in its native habitat: a theatre. In general, a pro-shot seeks to film the exact experience that audience members would have at a live performance of the show, in contrast with a feature film which actually adapts the piece into a new form, including different locations, the removal of theatrical aesthetic, and changes to make the script work as a film as opposed to as a live theatrical show.

Tom Stoppard has such a knack for language. It feels a little like surfing sometimes, but, like, we did a run the other day, and I'm a little exhausted. Not physically, just sort of vocally, from having to talk so much.

For me, the message of this play is that family is the most important thing. Having, keeping, and surviving those family ties and those memories.

‘And the world will know...’ how much I love going to the Royal Theatre in Benton. I love the theatre troupe, I love their program they cultivate with The Young Players, I love their concession stand, and I love their programming.

Kudos to the entire cast and crew, and to director Joe Kemprowski for an electric production that inspires and offers hope.

Classy standards done with high-class talent are always on the menu at Dizzy's in the series curated and hosted by Deborah Grace Winer. The October edition on 10/13 featuring standards with music by Hoagy Carmichael was a sure bet.

This time, the reader question was: What is the history of Romeo and Juliet on Broadway?

Czech-born British playwright and screenwriter Tom Stoppard, 87, was the child of non-observant Jews whose family fled Czechoslovakia during World War II, just prior to Nazi occupation. Stoppard then spent much of his young life in India, and then Nottingham and Yorkshire in England, becoming the very essence of an intellectual Englishman.

The Buffalo theatre season is back in full swing and it's off to a great start, if the fine production of DISNEY'S NEWSIES THE MUSICAL is an indication. Playing at Shea's 710 Theatre alongside co presenter The D'Youville Kavinoky Theatre, the creative talent assembled showcases the best of Western New York's talent.

MOULIN ROUGE The Musical Is something entirely new to the wave of Juke Box musicals overwhelming the Great White Way.  It is big, bold, brassy, and projects an altogether sexy sumptuousness while maintaining a sense of humor about itself. The audience leaves the theater on a massive sugar high, fully entertained. The dancing, vocals, lighting, sets, and orchestrations are all “par excellence.”   It may not be challenging  theater, but MOULIN ROUGE is great entertainment. 

Filled with high-energy singing and dancing that explodes out of an inspirational story based on real events, MTW's new production of this Disney stage musical is a guaranteed fun time, thanks to a terrific ensemble, and memorable music from Alan Menken and Jack Feldman. The show continues at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center thru July 28, 2024.

Set designer Ann Beyersdorfer and choreographer Lindsay Joy Lancaster are making their STAGES St. Louis debut working on the upcoming production of Disney’s NEWSIES. Beyersdorfer, a Belleville, Illinois native, is a world class set designer who has created sets for Broadway, National Tours, Saturday Night Live, and the St. Louis Muny. Lancaster, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, is the head of dance at The Institute for American Musical Theatre. Both sat down with Broadway World during their dinner break to talk about what brought them to STAGES St. Louis, how excited they are to work on this production of Disney’s NEWSIES, and the fresh perspectives they are bringing to the show.

I remember trying to watch Moulin Rouge when the movie came out in 2001 and only getting about halfway through it. I have to confess I found the story rather trite and entirely predictable, only elevated by the inclusion of lots of catchy pop songs. So I was delightfully surprised when I saw the current iteration of this piece as a Broadway musical. Here I was all set to cast my weary, cynical eye on one more story of the ‘ho with a deadly disease (they do seem to be disproportionately prone to tuberculosis), but I was thoroughly entertained by this dazzling, dizzying, diamond of a show.

A spectacle among spectacles takes to the Shea's Buffalo stage as MOULIN ROUGE: THE MUSICAL bedazzles it audiences. Settled in for a 2 week run, MOULIN ROUGE is the epitome of eye candy presented to be entertainment for the masses, just like the real Moulin Rouge,  which draws in tourists by the droves.
