Newnan Theatre Company Holds Auditions for SEUSSICAL, 6/10-11; Show Replaces 'FIDDLER'by BWW News Desk - May 24, 2012Newnan Theatre Company has just announced auditions for “Seussical the Musical,” a family-friendly show based on books by Dr. Seuss. Cortland Rep Announces Pavilion Award Nominations for High-School Theaterby BWW News Desk - May 23, 2012Cortland Repertory Theatre has announced the nominees for their tenth annual “Pavilion Awards” which recognize Outstanding Achievement in local high school theatre. For the sixth year, First Niagara Bank serves as the Corporate Sponsor for this program, which allows for many categories within the musical and non-musical genres. Musicals in consideration were held at the Cortland, Dryden, Groton, Homer, McGraw and Tully High Schools. Non-musical plays were also presented at Cortland, Homer and Tully. (more...)

Barksdale Theatre and Theatre IV Merge to Form Virginia Repertory Theatreby BWW News Desk - May 20, 2012Barksdale Theatre and Theatre IV announce that the two nonprofit theaters will formally merge effective July 1, 2012 under a new name - Virginia Repertory Theatre (Virginia Rep). With a budget exceeding $5 million, four distinct venues, and an annual audience over 550,000, Virginia Rep will become the largest professional theater and one of the largest performing arts organizations in Central Virginia along with the Richmond Ballet, Richmond Symphony, and the Virginia Opera. Barksdale and Theatre IV celebrated the announcement and the unveiling of the new Virginia Rep sign today, May 20, at the November Theatre (formerly the Empire Theatre) at 114 West Broad Street at 4:00 p.m. after the closing of Seussical, thelast mainstage children’s production under the Theatre IV name. Christopher Ashley to Direct Film Adaptation of Ahrens & Flaherty's LUCKY STIFF, Starring Jason Alexander, Nikki James et al.by BWW News Desk - May 16, 2012Several Tony Award-winners are teaming up to bring an adaptation of the 1988 musical “Lucky Stiff” to the screen. The show, based on Michael Butterworth’s 1965 novel “The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo,” was written by Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty and first performed at New York’s Playwright’s Horizons where it won the Richard Rogers Production Award before going on to London and hundreds of international productions. Ahrens & Flaherty went on to win the Tony for their musical “Ragtime” as well as two Academy Award nominations. Other notable credits include “Once On This Island” and “Seussical.” Ahrens has adapted the play for the screen, while Flaherty and Ahrens have written additional songs. (more...)

Broadway's ANNIE Names Orphans!by BWW News Desk - May 15, 2012After more than 5,000 auditions in a coast-to-coast search, ANNIE has announced casting for the orphans for the new production of the classic Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. ANNIE will open on Broadway in Fall 2012 at a Nederlander theatre to be announced. The production will be directed by three-time Tony Award winner James Lapine and choreographed by Tony Award winner Andy Blankenbuehler. (more...)
