Faye Butler, This Novemberby BWW News Desk - Oct 18, 2012Following its celebrated opening at Seattle Repertory Theatre, Pullman Porter Blues travels across the country to sweep D.C. audiences along for a ride in its world-premiere co-production at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater. Inspired by her grandfather's work on the postal trains, playwright Cheryl L. West, whose work at Arena Stage includes Jar the Floor and Play On!, returns with the tale of three Pullman train porters whose journey is underscored by Midwest blues songs, including "Sweet Home Chicago" and "This Train." Directed by Lisa Peterson (Arena's The Rainmaker and The Quality of Life), Pullman Porter Blues runs November 23, 2012 - January 6, 2013 in the Kreeger Theater.

A lot of changes planned for this week. So far, I'm really proud of our creative team. They have managed to cut over 15 minutes off the show, tightened its focus and its storytelling, and been very brave with the cuts. Last week we even cut a song, DEMON IN A DRESS, which was sung by two-time Tony winner George Hearn (he was so gracious about it - a fine example of professionalism. We all worship and adore him). But by the end of last week, we were all pretty worn out. The combination of an already nearly impossible schedule during previews, and then the stress of hurricane Sandy and its transportation challenges was a lot for even the hardiest of theatre folk! 5th Avenue New Works Program Seeks Musical Theatre Writers and Composers; Deadline 12/15by BWW News Desk - Nov 21, 2012The 5th Avenue Theatre is looking for Pacific Northwest musical theatre writers and composers to join its new 5th Avenue Writer's Group. A part of The 5th's New Works program, the Writer's Group seeks to cultivate the next generation of musical theatre writers, right in our own backyard. Under the mentorship of 5th Avenue professionals, three participating teams will grow into savvy, creatively driven writers and composers ready to take their musical theater projects to the next level. Directed by Bill Castellino and with music direction by Christopher McGovern, the 3-member company features Jason Mills, Rebecca Pitcher and Tom Souhrada.
