Author From International Writers of the Future Contest Wins Short Story Prize

The 2012 Nebula Award winners were announced earlier this week and it is no surprise that among the nominated was a 2007 winner of the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future contest. Aliette de Bodard won best Short Story for 'Immersion,' which was published in Clarksworld last June. The Nebula is the top Award bestowed by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America organization. They also honor best Novel, Novella, Novelette, the Ray Bradbury Award for Outstanding Dramatic Presentation, the Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy Book, the Solstice Award, the Kevin O'Donnell Jr. Service Award and the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award. NASCAR Drivers Join Coca-Cola for Family Track Walks, 5/24

I have a cat, and his name is Jazz. If I don't pay any attention to Jazz, he begins to meow. This is a simple animalistic act to show he needs my attention. We, being performers, are very similar. If we don't get any attention, we begin to meow. Not out loud, but deep in our soul. We start to pine and, bit by bit, lose our light. We eventually lie down and put our paws over our eyes and fret. Jackie Hoffman & John Epperson Set to Lead ONCE UPON A MATTRESS Benefit for Transport Group, 6/17

Transport Group, the Drama Desk, Outer Critics' Circle, and OBIE award-winning theatre company, has announced that it will present a one-night-only, all-star concert of the acclaimed 1959 classic Broadway musical Once Upon A Mattress on Monday, June 17 at 7pm at the Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre in the Pershing Square Signature Center, 480 West 42 Street. Jackie Hoffman will star as Princess Winnifred with John 'Lypsinka' Epperson as The Queen Aggravain, and the evening will be directed by five-time Drama Desk nominee, Jack Cummings III. Composer Mary Rodgers will take part in a post-show discussion with the audience. Further casting will be announced at a later date. Following a critically acclaimed run at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater this past fall, One Night with Janis Joplin returns for a summer run. Leading the production is Mary Bridget Davies. Davies is joined by Sabrina Elayne Carten as the Blues Singer. Created, written and directed by Randy Johnson, the production is produced in partnership with The Pasadena Playhouse and Milwaukee Repertory Theater, in association with Todd Gershwin and Daniel Chilewich of One Night Productions, The Estate of Janis Joplin and Jeff Jampol of JAM, Inc. Cinedigm Picks Up VISITORS from Godfrey Reggio, Philip Glass, & Jon Kane

Cinedigm (CIDM) has acquired all North American distribution rights to 'VISITORS,' the new film from director Godfrey Reggio, composer Philip Glass and filmmaker Jon Kane. Seven years in the making, VISITORS is the fourth film that Reggio and Glass have collaborated on following the groundbreaking, internationally acclaimed, Qatsi Trilogy formed by the films Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, and Naqoyqatsi. Cinedigm plans to release VISITORS theatrically in 4K throughout Fall 2013 following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival where members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra will perform Glass's score live. 2Cents Theatre Group Announces Plans to Benefit HIV/AIDS Organizations With RENT

2Cents Theatre Group has announced that its production of Rent, Jonathan Larson's legendary Broadway smash hit that is now celebrating its 20th anniversary, will benefit four different HIV/AIDS research and support organizations during its run. Beginning on May 30, a percentage of each weekend's gross sales will be donated to AIDS Project Los Angeles, AIDS Research Alliance, Being Alive, and Alliance for Housing and Healing. Directed by Kristen Boule, with musical direction by Morgan Fitch, Rent opens on Friday, May 24. (more...)

Photo Flash: PEEPSHOW's Surprise Onstage Proposal

Audience members were treated to a wonderful surprise as they were on-hand to witness the first onstage marriage proposal at PEEPSHOW at Planet Hollywood on May 18. Ensemble cast member Sophia Monica, who performs the "Teddy" number in Vegas' only striptease spectacular, in addition to filling in for the "Bo Peep" role when headliner Coco is out of the show, was caught off guard as her long-time partner and father of her son, Etienne Carreira bent down on one knee and proposed to her onstage in front of the PEEPSHOW cast and audience. Carreira is a professional break dancer and is also a trained dancer. To celebrate, Sophia also did an impromptu back flip (in heels) at the end, which made the audience go crazy with Joy and excitement. Congrats to the newly engaged couple! (more...)
