Spring 2013 SpotLight Program Honorees Announced by Hennepin Theatre Trust

Hennepin Theatre Trust today announced the new spring 2013 honorees from Minnesota high schools recognizing musical theatre accomplishments by school and category for the 2012-13 SpotLight Musical Theatre Program. Now in its eighth successful year, SpotLight is Hennepin Theatre Trust's flagship educational initiative which honors and supports Minnesota high school musical theatre students and programs. This year, 56 schools, including nine from greater Minnesota, are presenting musicals made possible by the collaboration of almost 5,000 students and annually seen by an estimated 105,000 audience members. Farah Alvin (Nine, Grease!, The Marvelous Wonderettes) , Anika Larsen (Avenue Q, Rent, Closer Than Ever, Xanadu), Patti Murin (Wicked, Lysistrata Jones), Samia Najimy Finnerty, N'Kenge (Motown: The Musical, Sondheim on Sondheim), Orfeh (Legally Blonde, The Gershwins' Fascinating Rhythm, Love, Janis, Saturday Night Fever), Jarrod Spector(Jersey Boys, Les Miserables) and American Idol Finalist Erika Van Pelt will comprise the lineup for the June 10 edition of The Pop Show, part of the Broadway at Birdland series at Birdland Jazz Club. Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) announces the 2013 TRU Writer-Director Communications Lab on Saturday, June 29, 2013 from 11am-5pmat The Players Theatre's Steve & Marie Sgouros Theatre, 3rd floor, 115 MacDougal Street, NYC. Ten directors will be paired with ten playwrights in this unique lab that helps nurture one of the most essential - and sensitive - relationships in theater. SAFETY LAST Begins 5/24 at the Music Box Theatre

Hailed as one of the great film comedies of all time, the 1923 romantic comedy Safety Last includes one of the most famous images from the silent film era: Harold Lloyd clutching the hands of a large clock as he dangles from the outside of a skyscraper above moving traffic. For four days only, the Music Box Theatre gives audiences the rare opportunity to experience this comedy classic in celebration of its 90th anniversary. Lloyd was crowned the king of daredevil comedy thanks to Safety Last and - after decades of chases, explosions and CGI - the film's death-defying stunts still have the power to send audiences reeling. Safety Last will be screened in a new digital restoration made from the original nitrate camera negative, Friday-Monday, May 24-27 at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Avenue. (more...)

Lineup Announced for TexARTS' Summer Programs

Darcie Roberts, who played the title role in the U.S. first national tour of 'Thoroughly Modern Millie,' will serve as one of the professional guest teaching artists for the TexARTS summer musical theatre intensive, 'Thoroughly Modern Millie' (June 10 - 30). Students enrolled in this three-week, production-based intensive will rehearse while receiving instruction in acting, dance and voice from a team of professional instructors and special Broadway guests. Rehearsals culminate in a public performance on June 29-30. (more...)
