BWW Interviews: Scott RC Levy, Max Ferguson and Cory Moosman Discuss Fine Arts Center's THE DROWSY CHAPERONE

Starting today, the Fine Arts Center is delivering a love letter to musical comedy with The Drowsy Chaperone, a show the New York Times praised as 'a revved-up spoof of a 1920s song-and-dance frolic.' At a recent dress rehearsal I was able to sit down with several members of the cast and crew, beginning with Scott RC Levy, director of the Fine Arts Center who is making his Colorado acting debut as Man in Chair, the character guides the audience through the cast recording of the titular Jazz Age musical. CARRIE'S STORY is Released

In the wake of 50 Shades, there is a growing fascination with kinky fiction. Three of the top of authors of smart, edgy fiction are teaming up with New York's Pleasure Salon to hold a reading and Q&A in response to the curiosity about this trend. Molly Weatherfield, Laura Antoniou, and DL King will read from their steamy novels, and discuss the keys to writing intelligent and sultry stories. NJ Symphony to Present an All-Gershwin POPS Program, 4/19-20

The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra presents an all-Gershwin NJSO POPS program in New Brunswick and Newark, April 19-20. Conductor Gerald Steichen returns to the NJSO stage to conduct the Orchestra in Gershwin favorites including An American in Paris, Cuban Overture and selections from Porgy and Bess and Girl Crazy, along with songs from the composer's rich canon. BWW Reviews: Aurora's DROWSY CHAPERONE - New Laughs in a Nostalgic Show

Before Oscar Hammerstein II, Jerome Kern, and Richard Rodgers revolutionized the American musical, Broadway was filled with shows comprised of simple, silly characters; fun, up-beat songs; and storylines and plot-twists that rarely made sense. While 'The Drowsy Chaperone' didn't debut until 1998, this fictitous flapper-era farce would have fit in perfectly with the Gershwins' light-hearted 'Girl Crazy' and Cole Porter's joyous, but convoluted 'Anything Goes.' With music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison and a book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, 'The Drowsy Chaperone,' now playing through April 14th at the Aurora Theatre both faithfully celebrates and hilariously sends-up the musical comedies of this bygone era. Alhambra Theatre Opens CRAZY FOR YOU Tonight

In 1992, Crazy for You opened on Broadway and won the 1992 Tony Award for Best New Musical and ran for over 1600 performances before closing in 1996. Originally billed as 'a new Musical Comedy' by George and Ira Gershwin, the production is heavily based on Girl Crazy, a show written by the songwriting team back in 1930. Crazy for You will open at the new Alhambra Theatre & Dining tonight, March 20. (more...)

West Coast Premiere of THE BEAUX STRATAGEM Begins 4/6 at A Noise Within

A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical repertory theatre company, concludes its 21st season with the West Coast premiere of GEORGE FARQUHAR'S THE BEAUX' STRATAGEM, a hilarious period yet contemporary "buddy road trip" filled with eccentric characters adapted by THORNTON WILDER and KEN LUDWIG, opening Saturday, April 6 and closing Sunday, May 26, 2013 (previews begin Saturday, March 30). Set in the early 1700's in the English countryside, two girl-crazy young adventures are on the road-trip of their lives when, out of the blue, they find themselves hopelessly in love. Co-Producing Artistic Director Julia Rodriguez-Elliott directs the play, which is the remarkable creation of three playwrights working in three different centuries. Described as "sheer laugh-out-loud fun" (The Free Lance-Star), the play "glides confidently from silly to wry, from the pratfall to the riposte" (The Washington Post) and is "a delightful romp that seamlessly reaches across the centuries to combine the old with the new" (Theater Mania). The award-winning Musical Theatre Guild, a company of professional performers who present concert-staged readings of seldom seen musicals, will continue its 17th season with the Los Angeles premiere of A CATERED AFFAIR. The opening performance will take place on Monday, April 15, 2013 at 7:30 PM at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale. A second, and final, performance will occur on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at 3:00 PM at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza's Scherr Forum. (more...)

Original Broadway cast member Jared Gertner will star as Elder Cunningham in the First National Tour of THE BOOK OF MORMON, launching in Denver from August 14-September 2 at The Ellie Caulkins Opera House. Brooke Shields to Direct CHICAGO at Hollywood Bowl; Runs 7/26-28

Brooke Shields has been announced as the director of the Hollywood Bowl's upcoming production of CHICAGO, which holds the record as the third longest running show in Broadway history. Rob Fisher has also been announced as the conductor of the production. Shields starred in CHICAGO both on Broadway and in London's West End and this marks her directing debut. Fisher's association with the show began with the 1996 Broadway revival and he continues to be supervising music director of CHICAGO productions around the globe. (more...)

Christine Baranski, Kelli Barrett, Walter Bobbie, Jeremy Cohen, Dalton Harrod, Randy Skinner, Shonn Wiley, Karen Ziemba,New York City Ballet Principaldancer Joaquin De Luz and American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Irina Dvorovenkowill star in Rodgers and Hart's On Your Toes, the final Encores! presentation of the 2012-13 New York City Center season. Directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle, On Your Toes will have guest music direction by Encores! founding music director Rob Fisher and will play seven performances, from May 8 - 12 at New York City Center, W. 55th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues). The "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" ballet, originally choreographed by George Balanchine, will be staged by Susan Pilarre, who served as a Ballet Mistress of the show's 1983 Broadway Revival. (more...)
