Julie Taymor to be Honored at the 2013 Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art First Awards at Brooklyn Museum

Award-winning theatre, opera, and film director Julie Taymor will be honored at the 2013 Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art First Awards at the Brooklyn Museum on June 13 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The award, which honors women who have broken gender barriers to make remarkable contributions in their fields, will be bestowed on Taymor, winner of the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical in 1998. It will be presented by Museum Trustee Elizabeth A. Sackler and followed by a conversation between Taymor and feminist icon Gloria Steinem. (more...)


Verdi's JERUSALEM and More Set for Sarasota Opera's 55th Season

Sarasota Opera has announced its 2013 - 2014 Fall and Winter programming which will mark the company's 55th consecutive season of performing grand opera on the Florida gulf coast. Highlights will include the return of some of Sarasota Opera's most acclaimed productions, the Sarasota Opera premiere of Verdi's Jerusalem as part of the ongoing Verdi Cycle, and the debut of new concerts to the Sarasota Opera Concert Series. The Flying Dutchman, a three-act opera, captures legends of a ghostly ship and a cursed sea captain in search of true love. The National Theatre's production of The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time leads the list with eight nominations, followed by the toe-tapping new musical Top Hat receiving seven, and the West End transfer of Chichester Festival Theatre's revival of Sweeney Todd in close competition with six. BWW Reviews: American Symphony Blows a Kiss to DER VAMPYR at Carnegie Hall

I've always been a sucker for a good vampire story--and Heinrich Marscher's opera DER VAMPYR fits the bill. And while I don't expect it to turn up at the Metropolitan Opera (or even New York City Opera, for that matter), this 1827 singspiel sung in German with dialogue in English, performed by the American Symphony Orchestra under Leon Botstein, provided an exhilarating introduction to the work. Santa Rosa Hosts Finish of 2013 Amgen Tour of California and Makes History

In an unprecedented event the city of Santa Rosa, located in the heart of Northern California's Sonoma Wine Country will host the overall finish of the world wide prestigious Amgen Tour of California. The quaint town known as one of the top cycling destinations in the world has previously hosted the start and proceedings for the tour but this is the first time in its history that the route will go north instead of south starting in Southern California, heading north during the eight-day race, with a grand finale in Santa Rosa. The Santa Rosa Convention & Visitors bureau has worked closely with the local organizing committee since inception in 2006 to host participants and viewers of the event. At only 37 years old, Zvulun is hailed as a rising star in the opera industry, and has earned consistent praise for his creative vision and work in prestigious opera houses worldwide, including The Metropolitan Opera, and the opera companies of Seattle, Cleveland, Dallas, Cincinnati, Buenos Aires, Wolf Trap and more.
