APAC's Taryn Sacramone Honored Today at 2013 Top Women in Business Awards

The Astoria Performing Arts Center (APAC) has announced that Executive Director Taryn Sacramone is being recognized for her hard work and dedication to the arts and the community. On Tuesday, May 7, 2013, Senator Michael Gianaris honored Sacramone at the New York State Senate 16th Annual Women of Distinction Ceremony. Today, May 9, 2013, 11th Annual Top Women in Business Awards event will honor Sacramone as an influential women in business whose major achievements and whose participation in many community activities throughout the years has helped the borough of Queens grow. In the midst of it all, Sacramone is producing the Olivier Award winning musical, Blood Brothers, through May 18 at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church (more...)


BWW Reviews: Black Rep's Premiere Production of SMASH/HIT!

I'm still not sure exactly how I feel about the Black Rep's latest premiere production, SMASH/HIT!, although there is certainly a lot of potential to the story, and various elements that make up the plot, it's not completely cohesive. There's an awful lot to digest here in this drama that contains music, which might be better served as a complete musical (or as a less musical drama), instead of winding up neither fish nor fowl. But, I can't honestly say that I can't recommend this show, because it is engagingly acted, contains some catchy tracks, and has fine overall direction. It's a mixed bag, but it's a mixed bag worth seeing for yourself. (more...)

Pivot Arts Launches PIVOT MULTI-ARTS FESTIVAL, 6/6-22

Pivot Arts launches a new celebration of innovative theater, music and dance in unique and often historic spaces from June 6 - 22, 2013 throughout Chicago's Uptown and Edgewater neighborhoods. The inaugural PIVOT MULTI-ARTS FESTIVAL answers the City's call for a reinvigorated Uptown Entertainment District by uniting artists, businesses and local organizations around multidisciplinary "pop-up" performances occurring in a former Vaudeville Theater, an at-one-time Charlie Chaplin film studio and other historic spaces throughout these communities. APAC Announces BLOOD BROTHERS Extension

THE ASTORIA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (APAC) is pleased to announce the one-week extension of Willy Russell's (Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine) Blood Brothers, musical staging by Christine O'Grady, musical direction by Julianne B. Merrill, and directed by Tom Wojtunik. After playing to sold-out audiences and receiving critical acclaim, such as John Simon remarking, 'A tasteful revival of a worthwhile show, which you will want to catch whether or not you have seen the musical before,' Blood Brothers will extend a week at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church (30-44 Crescent St, Astoria, NY 11102. Casting has today been announced for Graham Linehan's award-winning comic adaptation of The Ladykillers, which returns to the West End from 29 June. The new cast will include Ralf Little (The Royle Family), Simon Day (The Fast Show), Angela Thorne (To the Manor Born) and Olivier Award winning actors John Gordon Sinclair (She Loves Me and classic film Gregory's Girl) and Con O'Neill (Blood Brothers and Telstar). Divinyls' Singer Chrissy Amphlett Dies at Age 53
