Seattle International Dance Festival's Art on the Fly Outdoor Kickoff Event Will Take Place 6/15by BWW News Desk - May 24, 2013Art on the Fly kicks off ten days of international dance. On June 15th, the streets of South Lake Union become an arts playground featuring the Massive Monkees, a Brazilian parade, an Egyptian wedding procession (including a kazoo sing-along), a live interactive marionette exhibit (where the audience pulls the strings), a Bollywood Flash mob, and FREE open dance classes from Seattle's best studios. American Composers Orchestra Names Derek Bermel Artistic Directorby BWW News Desk - May 23, 2013American Composers Orchestra (ACO) announced last night at its Spring Benefit at Tribeca Rooftop that composer and clarinetist Derek Bermel will be the orchestra's new Artistic Director, commencing with the 2013-14 season. Bermel has been ACO's Creative Advisor since 2009, and succeeds composer Robert Beaser who has been ACO's Artistic Director since 2000 and was ACO's Artistic Advisor from 1993. Bermel joins Music Director George Manahan, who has just renewed his contract with ACO for an unprecedented five years, in leading the ensemble in its mission to be a catalyst for the creation of new orchestral music. Aurora Theatre Company Announces Call for GAP Submissionsby BWW News Desk - May 23, 2013Berkeley's acclaimed Aurora Theatre Company is proud to announce a call for submissions for its ninth season of the Global Age Project (GAP) festival of new works. The company will choose four new plays to be presented as staged readings with professional directors and actors during the GAP festival in February and March of 2014; the festival will coincide with the company's fully-staged Bay Area Premiere of Johnna Adams's incendiary new play GIDION'S KNOT, directed by Jon Tracy (The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity). Each of the four prizewinners will receive a $1,000 award and their work will be considered for further development and production during Aurora Theatre Company's regular season; out of town artists will receive travel and accommodation expenses. The submission period opens June 3; deadline for play submission is July 31, 2013. Finalists will be announced in early December 2013. (more...)

SEASON OF CAMBODIA to Culminate with Visual Arts 'Open Studio' Exhibition, 5/25-27by BWW News Desk - May 22, 2013Organizers of Season of Cambodia announce the final week of events for its two-month long arts festival, which began in early April 2013, and now culminates with a visual arts 'Open Studio' exhibition of works by five artists-in-residence at Governors Island off the southern tip of Manhattan. This 'open studio' of work reflects two months of work by contemporary Cambodian and Cambodian-American artists in the disciplines of sculpture, photography, video, installation, and performance, curated by curator-in-residence Vuth Lyno and the final piece of the festival's visual arts program, IN RESIDENCE, co-curated by Leeza Ahmady of AhmadyArts and Asian Contemporary Art Week (New York City) and Erin Gleeson ofSA SA BASSAC (Phnom Penh).
