When it was announced that the next big production at Christiania theater would be a play with the nifty title 'Et dukkehjem 2 (A Doll's House, Part 2)' I didn't know what to think. I had next to no knowledge of the piece, other than it was a Broadway play which ran during the 2017 season. Was it a sequel to Ibsen's play? A Drama? A comedy? A 'social realism' post-feminist work examining the rules of society and gender? Well, as it turns out it's all those things... and more!

Universally acclaimed as the Best Play of the 2017 Broadway season, A Doll's House, Part 2, is a contemporary sort-of-sequel to Ibsen's A Doll's House, crackling with razor-sharp humor and intelligence relevant to today's audience.
Smart, suspenseful, moving, and funny, A Doll's House, PART 2 begins with a knock on the front door. Fifteen years earlier, unhappy with her husband's failure to regard her as a complex person, Nora famously slammed this door behind her, leaving her family to pursue her own happiness. Now, she returns for reasons unknown. But is everyone happy to see her?
When Nora Helmer slammed the door behind her 139 years ago, the fallout from her rebellion not only heralded the bold beginnings of modern drama, but they also chartered a future for feminism. Henrik Ibsen's play A Doll's House has remained a classic of the stage, as fresh, relevant, and provoking as it was in the late 19th century. And because the issues raised then remain ones still to be reckoned with today, Lucas Hnath's 2017 sequel, A Doll's House Part 2,continues to fascinate and audiences. The new production at Portland's Good Theater brings the characters and their crises to life with incisive power.
A DOLL'S HOUSE, PART 2, now in its world premiere at Steppenwolf, explores the gap between society's expectations for the central character Nora and how she perceives herself. Lucas Hnath's sequel to Ibsen's classic, proto-feminist work A DOLL'S HOUSE sees Nora returning through the very door she slammed fifteen years prior. She now must literally face the consequences of her desire to reclaim her identity and her quest to achieve equal rights to the men of 19th century society. In so doing, Hnath reveals that the chasm between Nora's societal/familial obligations and her obligations to herself may never be resolved.
