Carnival-Set A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM Opens This Week at African-American Shakespeare Company

Following the most well attended season in the company's history, African-American Shakespeare Company (AASC) will expand back to four productions this season, beginning with A Midsummer Night's Dream (fittingly for San Francisco, coming in mid-September when the city's weather is at its warmest and most benevolent), set in the twin-island country of Tobago and Trinidad during Carnival.

Moscow Ballet presents 25th North American Anniversary Tour of THE GREAT RUSSIAN NUTCRACKER

In November and December, theatres across the US and Canada play host to the 25th Anniversary production of Moscow Ballet's Great Russian Nutcracker in North America.  Moscow Ballet tours the acclaimed Christmas ballet annually to over 125 cities in the U.S. and Canada. The performance includes some of the best trained ballerinas and danseurs in the world, sumptuous costumes and hand-painted backdrops complete with Russian cultural touches. The production is a significant undertaking with three touring companies traveling and presenting over 187 performances in just two months!  The local (IATSE crews, in many cases) labor generated by the tours for stage crews alone totals more than 12,903 hours!

The Merola Opera Program launches its 60th Anniversary season on Sunday, June 11 with a Benefit Gala at City Hall and a concert immediately following at Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, featuring some of the acclaimed Merola program's most illustrious participants. The 60th Anniversary concert will feature performances by Merola alumni from the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and current and recent participants, including: soprano Deborah Voigt (1985); mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick (1983); Mark Morash, pianist and Merola Opera Program Music Director (1987); and soprano Tracy Dahl (1985); soprano Kristin Clayton (1993), mezzo-soprano Catherine Cook (1990), Bojan Knezevic, bass-baritone (1992, 1993, 1994), and John Churchwell, pianist (1996); baritone Quinn Kelsey (2002); 2013 Merola graduates mezzo-soprano Zanda Šv?de and tenors Pene Pati and Issachah Savage; soprano Julie Adams, and bass Anthony Reed,  all from 2014; Amina Edris and Toni Marie Palmertree, sopranos; and Brad Walker, bass-baritone, both from 2015; and 2016 artists Sarah Cambidge, soprano; Amitai Pati and Kyle van Schoonhoven, tenors; Andrew G. Manea, baritone; John Elam and Jennifer Szeto, pianists; and director Aria Umezawa.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts begins its 30th Anniversary celebration with another one-night-only star-studded evening of dance: Tour de Force III. The performance will be the first event to represent the array and diversity of the Center's artistic programming, in this case, 30 years of presenting the greatest ballet companies and the world's most celebrated dancers. Tour de Force III will be on Saturday, August 27 in Segerstrom Hall. Produced in collaboration with Ardani Artists, the program will include four Center premieres: Clay by Vladimir Varnava, Zeitgeist by Alastair Marriott, Tristesse by Marcelo Gomes and Le Divertissement du Roi by Maxim Petrov.
