The Los Angeles premiere of Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Schenkkan's By the Waters of Babylon brings two award-winning, long-time theater actors to the Geffen stage for the first time: Demián Bichir and Shannon Cochran. Bichir, who is currently starring as Mary Louise-Parker's love interest on Showtime's Weeds, will play the role of Arturo, a Cuban immigrant who is hired to (coincidentally) weed the garden of unconventional Austin widow Catherine. Cochran, who will star as Catherine, is straight from Chicago where she starred in sold out performances of The Lion in Winter at the Writers Theatre. (more...)

Shakespeare Theatre of NJ Presents 'Private Lives'

Private Lives, one of Noël Coward's most famous and successful comedies, takes the stage at The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey beginning August 6 and continuing through August 31. Performances are Tuesdays through Sundays at The Shakespeare Theatre's Main Stage, the F. M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre, 36 Madison Avenue in Madison. Tickets range from $29 to $33 for Previews and $38 to $53 for regular performances, depending on performance day and time and seat location. HAMLET And ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN Run Simultaneously

William Shakespeare's masterpiece Hamlet appears on one stage at the same time as a related play, Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead runs on the other stage according to Tim Shane, Artistic Director. Performed by one cast for two different audiences, the plays run on Friday and Saturday evenings from January 23 through February 7, beginning at 8:15 pm. A Sunday matinee on January 25 begins at 2:30 p.m. Tickets range from $15 to $30 for the shows, or you can buy a package deal for $45 that has VIP admission to each show. Sam Mendes directs a transatlantic company of actors in a double-bill of classic works for The Bridge Project's inaugural 2009 season, which pairs a new version of The Cherry Orchard by Tom Stoppard with The Winter's Tale. A formidable transatlantic company and creative team will mount these two new productions for seven internationally renowned theaters. Simon Russell Beale leads the British/American cast, playing Lopakhin in The Cherry Orchard and Leontes in The Winter's Tale. He is joined by Sin?ad Cusack as Madame Ranevskaya and Paulina, Richard Easton as Firs and Old Shepherd, Rebecca Hall as Varya and Hermione, Josh Hamilton as Yasha and Polixenes, Ethan Hawke as Trofimov and Autolycus, and Paul Jesson as Gaev and Camilo. Acclaimed film and stage actors Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard have joined the cast of Classic Stage Company's upcoming new production of Anton Chekhov's UNCLE VANYA, starring Tony Award winner Denis O'Hare as Vanya, and directed by Austin Pendleton, it was announced today by CSC Artistic Director Brian Kulick and Executive Director Jessica R. Jenen. UNCLE VANYA will begin previews on Saturday, January 17 at Classic Stage Company at 136 East 13th Street. An official press opening date will be announced in the coming weeks.
