The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced its 2012-2013 theater season. Reaching hundreds of thousands of audience members annually, the theater season features a new Kennedy Center produced production of Ferenc Molnár's The Guardsman; touring productions of The Book of Mormon, War Horse, Anything Goes, Irving Berlin's White Christmas, Jekyll & Hyde, and Million Dollar Quartet; and five top-notch Theater Productions from Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden as part of Nordic Cool 2013. LES MIS, WICKED, WAR HORSE & More Set for Fifth Third Bank Broadway Series 2012-13

The Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA) and Broadway in Columbus (BIC) today announced the 2012-13 Fifth Third Bank Broadway Series season. Four of the productions on the five-show subscription series have never before been seen in Columbus, including Irving Berlin's White Christmas, Million Dollar Quartet, Green Day's American Idiot, and War Horse, winner of five 2011 Tony Awards including Best Play. Disney's Beauty and the Beast, presented by NETworks, will also return to Columbus to kick off the new season. In addition to the five-show season package, season specials will include the return of Les Miserables and Wicked. (more...)

According to the London Evening Standard, theater powerhouses Stephen Sondheim and David Ives have teamed up on a new musical, which is currently in the earliest phases of composition. The Standard reports: 'Sondheim speaks of pushing forward and says he has '20 or 30 minutes' written of a new musical that he is collaborating on with American playwright David Ives, a New York regular little known in London.' Based on the beloved and timeless 1954 film starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, and Rosemary Clooney, the story revolves around Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, two iconic song-and-dance men who follow a sister act to Vermont, only to discover that the nearly-bankrupt lodge they were to perform is owned by their former commanding general. Now performing at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County, California through January 1, the current touring stage production of Irving Berlin's White Christmas--a beguiling, surprisingly-winsome re-imagining of the classic 1954 Paramount Pictures musical motion picture of the same name--is saved from being just another run-of-the-mill musical adaptation thanks to its incredible Irving Berlin melodies and its enjoyable dance performances that harken back to a simpler time. More than anything, this satisfying production is able to hold its own mostly because it doesn't seem to have any pretense in its core. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Costa Mesa Guarantees a WHITE CHRISTMAS

White Christmas is always a treat on film (1954) and even brighter on stage. The touring and original Broadway productions, which played Los Angeles only once at the Pantages in 2005, were gloriously directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Randy Skinner, who turns the second act opener 'I Love a Piano' into one of the most inventive and lively tap sequences ever. Now on stage at Segerstrom Hall, Costa Mesa the new touring company under the banner Theatre of the Stars Atlanta has supplied this production with meticulous director Norb Joerder, and wisely brought back Randy Skinner for his brilliant Tony Award nominated choreography. The sturdy acting company makes this production a sublimely frothy confection playing through New Year's Day January 1, 2012. (more...)
