20th-Century Opera Takes Center Stage in New York City Opera's 2010-2011 Season

New York City Opera General Manager and Artistic Director George Steel today announced the company's 2010-2011 season, which spotlights American composers and 20th-century works within a mix of world premieres, New York premieres and new productions. Offering audiences the opportunity to experience new and rarely performed operas as well as modern interpretations of traditional repertoire, the 2010-2011 season will also feature the launch of a concert series showcasing the non-operatic works of several of the composers of this season's operas. Taking advantage of the possibilities offered by the recent renovation of the company's home, the David H. Koch Theater, the concert series expands the repertoire and programming of City Opera and casts new light on the season's productions. (more...)


Jackson, Ebersole, O'Hara, et al., Join New York City Opera's Fall Concert, 11/6 & 11/7

New York City Opera has announced that Cheyenne Jackson (XANADU, ALL SHOOK UP, FINIAN'S RAINBOW) will join the fall concert's cast of Lucky to Be Me: The Vocal Music of Leonard Bernstein, on Saturday, November 6 at 8 pm and Sunday, November 7 at 1:30 pm. The concert, which will be held at the David H. Koch Theater, is directed by Ted Sparling and conducted by City Opera music director George Manahan. This exciting concert examines the work of one of America's most influential composers, including music from the Kaddish Symphony, Mass, Songfest, Wonderful Town, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, On the Town, West Side Story, and more. It will feature the musical talents of Jackson and other Broadway favorites: Victoria Clark, Christine Ebersole, Kelli O'Hara, Donna Murphy, Michael Cerveris, Darius de Haas and Michael Urie. Marty Thomas (XANADU, WICKED, THE SECRET GARDEN) will host intermission and post-show festivities. (more...)

Pittsburgh CLO Announces Full Casts of Local Productions - Starring Sally Struthers, Hunter Herdlicka, Liz Callaway and More!

Pittsburgh CLO has announced casting for its summer season, which includes six shows, featuring the national tours of Come Fly Away and The Addams Family, and CLO original productions of A Chorus Line, Annie, Fiddler on the Roof and Sunset Boulevard. Notably, A CHORUS LINE brings on board a slew of the show's national tour veterans, ANNIE stars Sally Struthers as Miss Hannigan, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF features Broadway's Lewis J. Stadlen, Susan Cella, Hunter Herdlicka, Joel Robertson, Emily Shoolin and Kay Walbye. Liz Callaway and Walter Charles are set to star in SUNSET BOULEVARD. (more...)

Pittsburgh CLO has announced the creative team for the 2012 Summer Season, running June 5 through August 5 at the Benedum Center. Three Pittsburgh CLO veterans and one newcomer highlight this group selected to helm the organization's 66th year of bringing Broadway's best to Pittsburgh's Cultural District. The season includes the National Tour of Come Fly Away (June 5-10), A Chorus Line (June 15-24), Annie(June 29-July 8), Fiddler on the Roof (July 13-22), Sunset Boulevard (July 24-29) and the National Tour of The Addams Family (July 31-August 5). BWW Interviews: The Man Behind The McCallum Theatre: A Conversation with Incoming President and CEO Mitch Gershenfeld

The McCallum Theatre, the Coachella Valley's premiere theatrical venue, celebrates its 25th Anniversary Season with a star-studded lineup of Classical Music, Jazz, Cabaret, Comedy and a Broadway Blockbuster Series which includes Rock of Ages, Dreamgirls and West Side Story. The McCallum Theatre opened its doors on January 2, 1988 with a gala performance honoring Bob Hope that was nationally televised. Since then The McCallum has been the Coachella Valley's mecca for world-class entertainment including an extensive array of Broadway and Cabaret offerings. The man behind the tremendous success of the McCallum's eclectic performance calendar for the past thirteen years is Mitch Gershenfeld, Director of Presentations and Theatre Operations, who will take the helm as the theatre's President and CEO beginning June 1. I had the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Gershenfeld as he begins preparations for The McCallum's exciting Silver Anniversary Season. Gershenfeld is warm, passionate, highly astute, a performing arts afficionado and a genuinely kind man. Here are a few highlights from that conversation. (more...)
